It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The last thing the BBC needs is for another faceless apparatchik to be appointed. They tried that with Entwistle and, as we all know now, that proved to be disastrous.
Patten's days as Chairman are also surely numbered after signing off Entwistle's extremely generous golden handshake.
I suspect that the Trustees will want to bring in two new outsiders to cast a fresh eye over the BBC's labyrinthine management structures and try and improve things.
They could do worse than someone like Eliza Manningham-Buller as Chair of the Trust. The DG will have to have broadcast experience, but not necessarily in the BBC. Might they consider a non-Brit?
Someone suggested Rusbridger earlier, but I doubt he would be a realistic option. For many on the right, the BBC is already too closely aligned with the Guardian and an appointment like that would confirm all their worst fears and would he accept the necessary cut in salary?
I also doubt that James Murdoch or Kelvin MacKenzie would be given serious consideration (2 other names that have been bandied about elsewhere).
Dimbleby appeared to be putting his case forward on the Today programme this morning, Another possibility might be Andrew Neill, who has relevant experience having run Sky in its early years."I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."
