The first cuckoo - or poppy!

I have just spotted an MP on the television News wearing a poppy. It is 23 October - on my calculation, 19 days before Remembrance Sunday.

I will wear my poppy over the appropriate weekend, as usual. Is extending the 'poppy season' to almost three weeks becoming slightly ridiculous?

terribly important for MPs to be seen to be supporting the armed services (not just at this time of year)

    it's a vote winner

have poppies started appearing on the newsreaders lapels yet ? I'm sure they have a large supply at television studios to make sure everyone appearing before the cameras is suitably attired

What! I hope you're not suggesting they don't buy new ones every year? That could be the end of the licence fee...
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Perhaps; but I'd willingly exchange an early start to the Remembrance season for an end to the seriously ridiculous appearance of Christmas goods in the shops before the summer is over!

Is Jon Snow still the only news-man to refuse to be coerced into wearing a poppy?

Aaah yes time for mr P to reappear with his annual rant about how anyone who doesn't wear one is a traitor and should be put in the stocks

Poppy sellers are not authorised to take to the streets before the first week in November, I think the BBC wardrobe department had a hand in this, or they are just recycling their poppies, in which case, shame on them.

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

But the poppy appeal has just been launched:

The Royal British Legion's annual poppy appeal is launched, with the aim of raising £42m to help service personnel and their families in need.

They go on sale on Saturday

Indeed it has, but Poppy Sellers cannot take to the streets until first week of November (I was a poppy seller last year for the first time) because that is the only time they are licensed to collect.

Then why are some MPs already wearing them? Stolen? Another scandal?

And to quote the pedantic Headmaster I worked for in the past, "You do not BUY a poppy; you make a donation and receive a poppy as a token". Not saying I agree - just quoting the great man.

I have seen quite a few people in the streets here wearing poppies since last Saturday. But then - I do live a couple of hundred yards from one of the back entrances to the BBC Television Centre
