Lang Lang gets thumbs up from Donohoe

Lang Lang was one of Peter Donohoe's 50 great pianists today. In his monotone and understated way, PD declared that we have to see through the publicity machine and the showmanship and find a great pianist 'in the making'. I've never joined in the general Lang Lang bashing, if only because he brings a new and younger audience to music. And as PD says, he has 'a superhuman technique'.

It seems a little odd to describe him as a great pianist 'in the making', yet include him in the 50 great pianists. Had he run out of 'great pianists'?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I haven't followed the great pianist programmes. I presume it is restricted to living ones ? Otherwise Lang Lang would be somewhere at the end of a long list.

        salymap

It isn't confined to living pianists, in the last week or so we have had Michelangeli, Kempff, Richter and others.

I think I should explain to the other members that this is antongould's totally unjustified name for the late, great Artur Rubinstein, for reasons I won't explain here If asked [which I won't be] I would put him very near the top of my list. One of the greats Iheard live and even the BBCSO mostly thought a lot of him,

Lang Lang has tremendous natural gifts enhanced by his commitment to hard work. He has also demonstrated that he is a learning pianist having had some instruction from Daniel Barenboim.

i confess both to being put off him by his exaggerated facial mannerisms but also to a growing interest in his development as an artist rather than as a hyped showman. He has much to offer and I'm hoping that the interpretative side of things will develop - the signs are good. He's clearly a bright man too and if young people are inspired by him to follow his musical interests, so much the better

Thanks, salymap. I was wondering who he meant by OS and would dearly like to know his reasons. Maybe references to his private rather than professional life?

Righto - but you do approve of him as a pianist, I take it.

I'll see pianorak's and raise you a couple of (Not a pianist I'm heavily into, by I came across him very early on as the pianist on the famous film-related recording of Mozart's PC#21, and then in the classic set of Bartok PCs...). Still we all have odd lacunae. Good old BAL for plugging the gap!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

This may be the nearest thing. Not sure if it's quite complete.

Sorry, no - nowhere near complete! I was multiplying 15 X 3 (pages)
