No, Hey N. Where I suspect we differ (those who are bright enough to have a go at thinking things through, anyway!) is in the strategy needed to put things on a more even footing. Without simply substituting one set of crooks for another. :-)
So I guess we can ignore the "example" of the beardyman then
what seems more than a little ridiculous is that the apologists for religion will bend over backwards to justify NOT doing what their religion suggests in the name of "common sense"
pure hypocrisy
how about prioritising those who have the least ?
hummmmm
not much chance of that is there ?
Forgive my innocence but I seem to remember that the "message" of the "great religion" was
"Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me."
not
"Jesus said, given the fiscal difficulties we are under we should be prudent and manage our investments to give the maximum of profit and if there's anything left maybe give a bit to help the poor but don't worry because God is an Englishman and will understand the need for sensible financial planning"
Anybody else raised the subject a few posts previous to my ironic preemptive raising of the subject:
#223
So there .
Your preemptive raising of the subject was certainly ironic in the total absence of the predicted response, and I merely requested a clarification of your actual views on the matter.
I'm delighted that you have now cleared up any confusion wholly caused by the preemptive raising of the subject ... many thanks again.
I said nothing about what kind of country I want to live in, but since you've apparently drawn your own conclusions, I would prefer to live in a country where power is . . . concentrated in the hands of . . . few individuals.
As long as it includes yourself!
(Nothing like an ellipsis where needed, as you've shown above).
Here we go again, these pesky atheists preaching to the rest of us by quoting from the Bible ...
1: I'm not an atheist that's an assumption
2: I thought you Paulists were supposed to believe in this stuff ?
I do know some people who DO and have great respect for them in their actions even though I don't believe in the sky fairy
but supposed "christians" who turn it on and off at will deserve nothing but contempt
I'm delighted that you have now cleared up any confusion
I'm delighted that you haven't demanded a strongly-worded explicit condemnation of every single aspect of the Soviet and Chinese systems of which you disapprove, signed in triplicate in the presence of a notary and one copy lodged at the Supreme Court.
You, yourself, have now raised the subject of the merits and demerits of the now defunct Soviet and (presumably) current Chinese systems, not me, so maybe you can elaborate on the actual point you wish to make?
To raise the standard of the dialectic here, I think it's time for a pythonesque Summarise Marx. Following which Simon will summarise the alternative strategy 'needed to put things on a more even footing' which he has arrived at.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
I'm sure contributors would be entirely satisfied if Simon's response were a link to his collected political writings, but failing that I for one await his response with interest.
