Seems a world away from our trip today on the South Tynedale Railway, narrow gauge replacement opened in 1985 for the BR 1976 redundancy ( kept going so long after Beeching because of the Alston-gets-cut-off-in-the-snow factor ). The promised steam engine non-functional for our there-and-back trip but ready and waiting for the second of the days 4 journeys so we saw it couple up, depart and return an hour later. Grandson disappointed, programmed by all the "Thomas" books to diss Diesel, muttered all the way home but the ice-cold crispness of the day and the dusting of early snow on the moors illuminated by the brilliant low winter sun enlivened the fantastic scenery and made the outing one to treasure.

          Thank you, Anna.

Ah. Well. I'm frightened to tell you this, but yes. And into 60009's cab too.

The good news is that there is a final chance to see these beauties at NRM Shildon in February. They'll be outside, and they hope to have some of them in steam.

Great pictures mangerton, thanks for letting us see them.
Which of them are still licensed for steaming? As far as I remember 60008 and 60010 are in museums in the USA and Canada normally, Is Bittern the only one still running?

I think Union of south Africa is still going and the Sir Nigel Gresley has become a fixture on the North York Moors Railway.

I reckon they missed a trick by not having an appeal to raise funds to repair Mallard . I suspect the endless money pit that is the Flying Scotsman out them off .

Don't know if anyone saw it but there was a brilliant Channel 5 documentary on the shipping of 60008 and 60010. I had a pleasant experience a couple of years back on the way back from a football match at Torquay, on Newton Abbot station I heard the familiar whistle of a 'streak' and Bittern rolled in on a special from Paignton to Poole. Looking forward to Shildon in February. 60009 hauled the last notrthbound 'Elizabethan' on 9th September 1961. I saw it at Doncaster - the last A4 to be underlined in my 'combined'.

Bittern this year was timed at over 90 mph, having been granted special permission for high speed running.

The Union of S A is active on rail tours and as I found out this week is still based at Thornton (Fife), which is very near me. As you say, Sir Nigel is now very active on the NYMR, having come from this in 2003 :

to this which I took in September this year:

I understood that the reason today was the last of the great gathering at York was because U of SA and SNG were off to earn their keep on Santa specials and the like .

Lucky you, mangerton, and some lovely photos. I've not had chance to get down to York, but the general feeling seems to be that the arrangement was not particularly photographer-friendly - although it must be difficult when grouping round a turntable. No matter, you got some lovely pics. Seeing 60007 at Grosmont reminds me that a few years ago, a mate and I blagged our way on to the footplate while it was in the shed. I was amazed to see that there was a regulator on both sides of the cab. Did all A4s have this feature, I wonder?

You brilliant person! I have used this nom-de-plume on a number of forums [fora] over a number of years, and you are the first to come up with that, and you are right, of course.

I have a confession to make in that I am an out-and-out Great Western man, but as you know, our names are all generic castles, halls, etc, so I look north and east for my codewords and so forth.

I'd like to say that you had won a prize for your perspicacity, but you know how it is - we poor old pensioners, and all that..............................!
