Clearly, my impression of a caring community on Platform 3 is a bit short of the mark.
I think that the elderly members of the Board who shop regularly at M&S will constitute too small a group to lend much weight to a campaign.

    Too busy sniping at Cameron
I haven't noticed much sniping at Cameron recently - unless he's taken over Breakfast.

If a store is both introducing customer unfriendly technology AND supporting exploitive working practices in the developing world, I would think about boycotting them, until they sort it out.

By this, RM, do you mean the self-service checkouts?

              Never use 'em.

never use automated , if I can possibly avoid it, if a human alternative is available.
                Not even in shops !!

Their only virtue is to remind me of the Member whose girlfriend used to say at crucial moments 'Unidentified object in the bagging area'.

I never use the self-service tills - and always make a point of telling the staff why - workers' solidarity, etc.

The Oxford M&S is currently being re-vamped and I was dreading more of these things appearing. I consulted a manager who was idling around and he assured me that there would be no increase, since surveys show that 'our customers prefer the personal contact'. (However, I recall a similar protest when petrol stations abandoned staff attendants several decades ago - and when was the last time a member of staff offered to fill a car with petrol?)

Its before the watershed, KB, especially for what RM has quite rightly identified as schoolboy humour . Naughty .

As the inflatable headmaster of the inflatable school said to the inflatable naughty boy who had run wild with a pin...you've let me down, you've let yourself down, you've let the school down......

No, I never use them either. It's at the normal checkout.

For people like my son (who has Aspergers) , the automated checkouts are brilliant, it means that he is able to buy things without stress , same is true for someone I know with CP who is often tired of people asking him to constantly repeat what he says
