As I have said before I have noticed no real increase in trails and don't mind them anyway. But ff has the Facebook millions behind her ..... It's, as usual, personal taste like Martin Handley's moles ....

I don't see how it can be simply 'personal taste' as, whatever the issue is (within reason), some will like it, some will hate it and others won't have noticed it anyway. The fact that 'someone likes it/isn't bothered by it' can't in itself provide justification. On any matter, a large number (possibly a majority) will be an opinionless blob, which allows TPTB to get away with anything, however unprincipled.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

You certainly did not. Though whereas the argument that "millions are up in arms about …" declares a situation of some gravity, the response that "Well, I'm not up in arms" might mereley be taken as an individual's assertion of 'personal taste'.

Apparently 'Bodyguard' was mentioned 3 times during last night's 'Strictly' - BBC incest of a high (or should that be low?) order...Perhaps a reference to 'Strictly' will be inserted into Mr Mercurio's excellent thriller as we approach what will, we are told, be a nerve-shredding climax.

Interested in checking the two forms trailer and trail (which I use), I looked up 'trail' in the OED ('Radio and Television. A piece of advance publicity (often an excerpt) broadcast prior to the transmission of a programme') and there was this example:

                1973 Listener 6 Dec. 798/1 Accidentally switching on early..on Radio 3..I heard..off-putting trails.

                NB Also 'trailer', same meaning.

I think I got "trail" from these boards. It sounds more radio, somehow.

Trailers are what you get in the cinema (and annoyingly on DVDs), before the main feature.

Trailer always used to be good enough. I suppose in these just-in-time production schedule days those extra two letters must take up too much time!

[While we're waiting for the complaints to restart ]

Yes, OED says Cinematography(!) for 'trailer', Radio and television for 'trail'.

There was another S. Walker trailer during the afternoon concert - embarrassing in the extreme, going on about Stephen Isserlis being a great tweeter, because of his great literary skills. I kid you not. By that logic, Wayne Rooney is another literary wonder.

I foolishly thought SI was a great cellist, rather than yet another Twit.

We should all resolve to have no truck with trailers.
