As has often been said - it's not as though it's even stevens - I think I can categorically state that sports broadcasts don't have Stockhausen clips inserted several times during their airtime. Why not?
The reason for the plethora of sports trails is possibly the demographic overlap between the Radio 3 audience which skews male ,over 55 , and ABC1 and the radio sports audience which is similar - especially for Rugby and cricket. Whether it works in this case I just don’t know. You don’t have to believe me if you’d don’t want to but research I used to have access to suggests that the number of people irritated by trails is exceeded by the number who find them useful. There’s a lot of research which suggests that trails are in general effective especially in attracting an audience to a new series. I was never convinced though about trailing something that’s always been there - like cricket commentary.

On that basis there should be an equivalent number of R3 adverts inserted in the sports broadcasts, preferably at highly inappropriate moments...
Those who follow sport know it's on - as do those of us who don't - so the new series argument is weak to say the least, as you note re: cricket commentary.

There may be a PhD thesis on Rugby songs , but meanwhile 'Delilah' has come under fire from feminists, who apparently claim the words are sexist. No surprise there. 'Sexist' is coming to mean 'anything I disagree with said by a man'.

I think it was more to do with the words being about a man admitting that he knifed a woman to death: "She was my woman" as if women were possessions of men. Not just a question of 'disagreeing' with what he said for most men, although there may be some men who would agree with what he was singing. Is this on an annoying r3 trail?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

It was in connection with a follow-on exchange from mention of sports intrusions(aka trails/adverts on R3). Would give you the relevant post numbers but they only appear when not logged in... Look at previous page for PhD and Delilah references.

No FF. Its to be heard in a potentially annoying * Welsh rugby international game and is likely to be heard this pm v Argentina. I was musing about why we never hear Sospan Fach at Welsh games any more. There has been a narrowing of the range of songs sung at rugby games (IMHO) and I was wondering why.

*annoying if the Welsh lose that is…

I remember, I did see the original quote: it was more the objection to the term 'sexism' that I was referring to.

The adverts and prompted me to listen to things they promote.
Annoyingly listening to and commenting on radio 3...

I see the Christmas Carol Competition trails have started. I chuckled to hear them say 'no experience is necessary' which reminded me of Mozart's famous 'how to compose without the least knowledge of music'; and claim that they are open to any style. Yeah, and the rest. I can already imagine who will win and what it will sound like.

It should be a gift to anyone with any talent. (Ho ho ho).

And not hesitate or deviate from the subject. That rules out Smiths Crisps and Tescos own brand Shepherds Pie being able to avail themselves of the season for advertising purposes, of course. Paul Merton would make a good judge.
