This is the current R3 marketing ploy - flogging Classical music as a meditative crutch. There are many interpretations of mindfulness, but I don't consider listening to music per se to be mindful - nor, I believe, did the Buddha! Just as the bathwater is not in itself immersive, nor is music mindful. Both require the actions of the bather or the meditator.

It was - though without your post I would never have remembered. He worked for OUP (and didn't read The Times!).

12-times winner Mark Goodliffe 'suffered a shock semi-final defeat' last year, but says he'll be back.

Mildly ironic that on Breakfast yesterday - Squire Trelawny had a huge moan about how advertisements were taking over our everyday lives ….

The Squire has been mentioned in numerous adverts on R4 in what appears to be a push to get more listeners to R3

Yes at about ten to nine every day....as if Radio 4 doesn't want us to listen to what's on at nine - Thurs...In Our Time; Fri...Desert Island Discs - some justification there!

A couple of days ago I happened to switch the radio on when I came down for breakfast - I was not completely with it at the time - and in due course heard what I assume is the revised version of one of the ads, asserting that R3 is the home of live classical music [my bold although it was slightly stressed by the announcer]. Couldn't help thinking that it is convenient a) that 'live' no longer means what it used to and b) that they can get away with that claim as no-one else broadcasts live(as in not recorded in some way) classical music?

One wonders what the home of dead classical music would be like.

To me, 'dead' classical music is the opposite of what R3 is offering: the equivelent of 'dead' languages: vintage (or 'classic' or 'historic') recordings of complete pieces , played by artists closer to the composers than today's young hopefuls; most of my own listening, in fact. For me,the absence from R3 of the artists of the past is the biggest sign of dumbing-down on Radio 3, where, for Elizabeth Alker 'way back in time ' means 1999.

"Red Nose Day is back..." Click - OFF. So much for popping back to the station.

If they wanted to discourage me from taking part in red nose day they couldn't do it more effectively than with that repulsive trailer.

                              It’s completely inappropriate to Radio 3 isn’t it ?
sometimes I wish people were aware of what many in the corporation think about these charity days. They bend the BBC’s editorial guidelines to breaking point , are often sloppy in production terms and full of second rate lacklustre material, sickeningly sentimental, and are a magnet for the publicity obsessed and sometimes frankly mad. But in the words of Smashy and Nicey “it’s all for charidee mate …”

I guess they raise millions and that’s the excuse , But is that just money taken away from other charities?

I suspect that some people's definition of 'charitable giving' may be limited to an annual donation of £25 on Red Nose Day. and putting unwanted 1p and 2p coins in collecting tins.
