    are you a pleb ?

    are you a pleb ?

I think I am. It's important to know one's place in society and not get above oneself - that way anarchy lies.

Tory chief whip Andrew Mitchell has flatly denied calling Downing Street police "plebs". But does anyone really use this term any more?

    apparently already dubbed "gategate"

I'd be happier to be called a prole.

I've never used the expression 'Pleb' when referring to someone. It is, to me, an expression meaning 'thick' and I think it's a word only used by late middle-aged men who have been to public school and therefore stuck in a time-warp as regards their attitudes towards the lower orders. However, to restore it to the orginal meaning, I am not, nor ever have been, a member of the ruling classes so I guess that does make me plebian. Or, common as muck.

You are definitely not one of the lower orders, Anna.

In my humble opinion, of course...

I'd much rather be a pleb than a pompous prat though objective opinion might indicate I could well be both ...

What's in a name ... sticks and stones 'n' all that.

Must admit I'm extremely jealous of those police officers who got the chance to tell a senior government minister in person to 'get off your bike'.

The stuff of dreams with which very few of us are ever afforded the opportunity to realise ... congratulations, officers!

I've just heard an old clip on the radio of Boris Johnson stating vehemently that anyone who swears at a policeman should be arrested.

A member of the ordinary people or working classes; = plebeian n. 2. Freq. derogatory: an unsophisticated or uncultured person. See also plebs n. Now colloq.
...says OED. I think this is almost always used in a derogatory sense - and by those who consider themselves 'above' (e.g. 'Thrasher ' Mitchell) about those they consider to be 'below'.

I'd much rather be a pleb or an oik - or both - than a nyaff who has the soubriquet "thrasher".
