Many thanks for this. I met him a couple of times (most memorably on a train rattling from Wolverhampton to Aberystwyth in the 1980s) and had some interesting conversations with him about Elgar when he came over to Manchester for Elgar Society meetings.

The Daily Telegraph published a (somewhat belated) obituary on the 10th of October. He seems to have had an interesting life.
