Salymap - They really were the best with many shops in South London and the surrounding areas. I used to go to the ones in the Walworth Road and Crown Hill, Croydon. I was really disappointed when they had to close after 130 years. It wasn't just the food. They were an important part of local history. Worse, they won't give anyone the secret recipe of their pork chipolatas and I can't understand why. Now I go to Priory Farm in Nutfield, near Redhill but it is less convenient - http://www.prioryfarm.co.uk/ - Lat.

The usual sort of bank holiday Monday. Went by bike through rain to Cadogan Hall for the Chamber Prom, unexpectedly met up there with friends, joining them for a post-Prom drink nearby, then cycled home. Mixed salad with piri piri humous dip and walnuts followed by fresh fruit salad with ice cream shortly to come. There doesn't seem to be anything of interest on the box tonight after last night's emotionally draining "Atonement" on ITV3, and not bothering with the Broadway Prom, so will probably listen to Tim Berne's Caos Totale, taped onto cassette from a broacast from the Bloomsbury Theatre back in 1993, and tune in to Jez on 3 before making an early night of it.

What was/is it about Kennedy's sausages that makes them such a South London Legend. 50 years ago I used to buy them in Streatham; they tasted better than anyone else's and it seems they still do.

... it was the propinquity of that barber's shop to the place where the sausages were made.

The word missing from this thread and (it appears) your lives is Children. I've been running a paper aircraft factory, given 3 arduous & intensive frisbee training, bought a new football to replace the one punctured in the rose bushes etc...

Cats are missing on the thread too! She's been on my lap looking out at the rain, rain, rain, so I read even more of the Guardian than usual whilst she fell asleep. Earlier, pulled on 2 dressing-gowns to refill 8 bird dispensers and never mind the rain.
Listened to Knussen's 3rd Symphony on iplayer, and Karajan's surprisingly good Symphony of Psalms.
Had great fun seeking out listening to and ordering CDs by Goehr, Knussen and Max Davies. Hope to get around to new download of Schwertsik and Gruber later, after Tomato Soup and Chicken Salad, if I'm not too drunk and the cat will let me.

Staying in bed till 15:00 really charges the batteries!

I suspect that for many on here the children have long flown the nest or, in my case, never had any in the first place. Can't decide whether that's a case of or .

Isn't it good? Didn't see it last night, but have it on blu-ray. I think that long long tracking shot around the chaos of the beach, when they arrive at Dunkirk, with the musical score based harmonically on, and merging with, the hymn sung by the soldiers on the bandstand ("Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still, small voice of calm!"), is one of the most spine-tingling scenes in cinema
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Up late, read for a bit because it rained here - avoided mowing lawn. Spoke to No 2 daughter - still no news of impending % overdue grandchild. I think it's decided that the world is best seen from where it is. Daughter still not keen on playing it Mozart.

Spent most of PM dismantling and repairing neighbour's electric bed....don't ask! Then a nice bottle of Italian red with roast chicken dinner. Long day tomorrow so Night Night all!! Perhaps a quick read before Matron and lights out.

Today, busy, and business as usual I'm afraid, Bank Holiday or no Bank Holiday.

My partner, born & bred in Dundee, remembers Christmas not being a holiday, & his parents going to work as usual.
