    My experience, too, Alpie.

I remember borrowing one in the late 1980's (I think ?) to do a mix of a band I was in
but can't remember much more than us thinking how cool we were using it

According to this review in The Gramophone the EMI one was 15(?) bit, 50k...

This page mentions in passing that the Decca one was 16, later 20 bit, 48k - and has some photographs...

During the mid 1970’s the Decca Recording Company designed and developed for its own use the first successful digital audio recording and post production system. Building on a history of genuine innovation and technical achievement, the Decca team at West Hampstead developed a digital mastering system that was for a time probably the best stereo recording system on the planet. Back with the original subject, I'm thoroughly enjoying the weird sounds emanating from a 6-LP set I bought a few weeks ago for 50p (sic): lovely DGG c1970 black shiny discs, apparently unplayed.

It's called "avant garde vol 2" and includes Cage (simultaneous perormances of the same 3 works as at the Prom the other week - Atlas Eclipticalis, Winter Music and Cartridge Music), Zimmermann, Stockhausen, Kagel, Koenig, Pongracz, Riehn, Schnebel, and improvisations by Gruppe Nuova Consonanza. Only the sleeve-notes could be better

Totally silent pressings and a Linn Sondek - who needs digital??

I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Who needs a 12" turntable, a tone arm and a pickup cartridge:

The rest of AG Vol. 2 is there too.

bryn: please leave me with my illusions (delusions).

                I don't have much use for downloads - I'm a collector for heaven's sakes - but could I really get 6 LPs'-worth for 50p???

I forget just how much I paid for that set on its release, but it was a lot more than ten bob.

The general s/h shop in Fore St, Bodmin. I came away with 2 CDs (Tokyo 4tet in Haydn Op76) and 9 LPs (avant garde 2 box, Delius Miniatures - Del Mar, Copland conducting his Short & Dance symphonies, and "Courtly Pastimes of 16th century England" by St George's Canzona) all for less than a fiver!

                              Haven't you heard ...

... vinyl is back - at ridiculous prices. Hang on to what you've got. From the first digital note I ever heard to a recent listen of an LP after decades, analog wins every time. Pixelated v brush strokes. The CD 'revolution' was a cynical marketing ploy of an already obsolete technology when it was introduced in the 80s.
