This page mentions in passing that the Decca one was 16, later 20 bit, 48k - and has some photographs...
During the mid 1970s the Decca Recording Company designed and developed for its own use the first successful digital audio recording and post production system. Building on a history of genuine innovation and technical achievement, the Decca team at West Hampstead developed a digital mastering system that was for a time probably the best stereo recording system on the planet. Back with the original subject, I'm thoroughly enjoying the weird sounds emanating from a 6-LP set I bought a few weeks ago for 50p (sic): lovely DGG c1970 black shiny discs, apparently unplayed.
It's called "avant garde vol 2" and includes Cage (simultaneous perormances of the same 3 works as at the Prom the other week - Atlas Eclipticalis, Winter Music and Cartridge Music), Zimmermann, Stockhausen, Kagel, Koenig, Pongracz, Riehn, Schnebel, and improvisations by Gruppe Nuova Consonanza. Only the sleeve-notes could be better
Totally silent pressings and a Linn Sondek - who needs digital??Last edited by LeMartinPecheur; 27-08-12, 21:35. Reason: Replacement of 'notes' with 'sleeve-notes - to avoid sarcasm from musical reactionaries!I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

[By the way, great resource that the wolf fifth site is, beware of trojans hiding in at least one of the advertising pages generated by it. Avast just trapped one for me.]

Haven't you heard ...
... vinyl is back - at ridiculous prices. Hang on to what you've got. From the first digital note I ever heard to a recent listen of an LP after decades, analog wins every time. Pixelated v brush strokes. The CD 'revolution' was a cynical marketing ploy of an already obsolete technology when it was introduced in the 80s.
