Thanks visualnickmos, that makes sense. Alas I dont own either of them, but Kogan's original LP issues are spectacularly valuable - at least a thousand quid per disc in the original issue, and probably several thousand for a good copy - so it doesnt surprise me that his CD reissues also command high prices.

Of course, this has nothing to do with whether or not Kogan was a good violinist, though I am sure he was, but much to do with the availability of his recordings. If you have a copy of any of his four or five original LP issues on the original Columbia blue and silver labels, and they are in good condition, look after them, people will pay BIG money.

I have one, but it isnt for sale.

There is no Mrs Umslopogaas, but I need to discuss this with my nephew, who will inherit the collection. He told me he would like to have it and so he will one day, but I dont think he really knows what he is in for. A ton of vinyl LPs take up a lot of space.

Kogan was as wonderful a violinist as David Oistrakh was but, alas, didn't have the career that was due to him. I think he offended the Russian authorities who restricted his travel. IMHO, he belonged to the pantheon of the greatest masters of horses tail and cow gut.

Luckily for me, I do have both. However, I have NEVER bought a CD or set, with potential future value in mind. I will never do so. That is for 'collectors' who are only interested in acquiring a potential investment, whereas I am an enthusiast (the two are different) of classical music.

Kogan: marvellous violinist. Sadly not a huge recorded legacy, but worth snapping up if available; Kachaturian's VC with the Boston (maybe Chicago - can't be bothered to cross the room to check!) on RCA, for example.

Listen to vinyl every day. CDs too. 78s from time to time. Youtube regularly.

Some years ago I had an idea for a money making scheme. Visit charity shops and scoop up all the good vinyl, then sell it on eBay. Simples!

Rather than try, I investigated prices on eBay, and looked at some fairly decent LPs in local charity shops. I found that in most cases the prices in charity shops were comparable to those on eBay - hence not a particularly clever business idea, given the overheads and effort of buying, then trying to sell on the LPs. I decided not to bother.

Schemes like this are usually stimulated by observing some high prices, such as for SAX 2323 - Tchaikovsky violin concerto by Leonid Kokan.

See http://www.popsike.com/php/quicksear...htext=SAX+2323 A few weeks after noticing one of those Tchaikovsky Kogan LPs selling on eBay I picked up a CD version in the now defunct Tower Records for around £5.

It is still quite easy to obtain some recordings by Kogan, and even some on LP if one wants them. Presumably there is something "special"/"magic" about the Columbia LP which collectors want, though I've not figured out what that might be.

There's more on this particular recording here:

Let's first diffuse the price outrage. This reissue of Leonid Kogan's epic performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto and Meditation by The Electric Recording Company, limited to 300 copies, costs £300 or about $504.

              CD - coupled with Brahms - see http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/a/-...an/medium-CD/1 £11.90

              Box set of CDs - http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Leonid-K.../dp/B00LZLGBH4 £90

Testament LP - http://www.testament.co.uk/shop/product/sax2323.aspx £19.99 - though allegedly not as good SQ as the Electric Recording Company's version for about £300 - they would say that, wouldn't they?!

Dave 2002, I havent looked at any of those websites, but this collector's mania for owning the original item is analogous to first edition books. I have a copy of Darwin's Origin of Species in Penguin paperback, cost about fifty pence and value nil. A first edition of the same would set you back fifty thousand quid, and the Penguin edition is better, because mistakes in the first edition have been corrected. So, if you want Tchaikovsky's violin concerto played by Kogan, buy the CD for fifty pence and you will be satisfied with a better version than the first issue. But if you want something worth fifty grand, you have to find the first edition. That is a Columbia blue and silver label LP and is VERY unlikely to turn up in a charity shop for fifty pence. If it does, grab it.

Collectors are not rational beings. They strive for the first edition, not the contents of it.

1000 78s are quite heavy. I moved them in a car load last year.

I have between seven and eight thousand, so maybe a ton and a half. The earlier ones are heavier, LPs from the seventies and eighties were much thinner. Wall space for shelves is getting scarce, but I still have a few spare feet and could accommodate another couple of thousand, which it is unlikely I shall acquire (cant find them these days except on ebay and the good stuff there is too expensive).
