    Airport taxes

Does anyone know how airport taxes (the "usual" add ons etc.) are worked out/charged?

Usually I tend to ignore these, at least when "paying" for a ticket - not one of those silly 1p or £1 filghts - as the taxes are usually not too large compared with the overall ticket cost.

However, I searched for flights from London to Dundee, and found that the taxes are comparable with the airline charges. Is it a free market for taxes - i.e charged by the airport, or is there some other mechanism? Are the taxes regulated in any way? Also, the taxes do not seem to be constant, even for the same airport. Reasons?

to maximise revenue - eg the John Lemon airport at Liverpool charges £10 to get 'preferential' treatment by security - basically if you don't pay you queue for ever, Blackpool charges a £10 'donation' to the rebuilding/expansion of services fund on the way out (no pay no flight)

That applies to Dundee as well, but there's also the additional V&A tax - not to be confused with VAT.

After all, this has to be paid for.

You are referring to airport charges rather than taxes going to the Treasury?? By contrast, Air Passenger Duty is set centrally:

APD should be abolished as I understand Netherlands and Denmark to have done; if it is, it might give even more pause for competitive thought to those who run long-distance train routes...

I'm sure you are right, but travel selection web sites simply call them taxes. A fairly common "tax" to Dundee is £82.92, which may result in a total charge of £143 or more from London City. Maybe it's not the arrival airport which gives rise to the charges - there could be charges at both ends I suppose. These taxes can be reduced by a detour (pointless, apart from saving a few bob) via somewhere like Belfast.

what is this nonsense about renaming things ?

At the ROH the FLORAL HALL is now supposed to be called the "Paul Hamlyn (and don't we love him and his foundation for giving us some money to refurbish it and it's such a modest gesture to insist on it now be named after him even though it already had a name !!!!) Hall"

at least Carnegie actually PAID for his to be built !

at the RFH the "Chelsfield Room" has now been renamed the "Level 5 function room" apart from by the technicians

I suspect you might have missed my implied sour comment - the old Speke (best described as 1930's corporation tiled mortuary design) is no more, tho now the distinctive front + entrance have been turned into a hotel - the airport facilities were removed to the other end of the runway and until Peel Holdings got hold it it (and before it became a Floozy Jet hub) the entrance was at the back of a housing estate with the only public transport a 45min bus journey (for abt 5 miles) into Liverpool centre
