Winnie Johnson's death from cancer has been announced. Down through the years this brave woman has appeared on TV pleading for information and always accompanied by the B&W smiling bespectacled image of her murdered son, and always followed by the photo of Ian Brady. It seems so sad that she has not had her wish, that before she died she would be allowed to bury the remains of her son. In this week of potential new revelations about Keith's whereabouts, her death makes me feel very sad.

In a decent society we would seen it as a priority to look after someone like this, offer her the support and perhaps the counselling/therapy that might have made her life a little less awful. She is part of us, just as Brady and Hindley are

I felt terribly sad at the news of her death and also felt a colossal anger against Ian Brady in refusing to reveal where the boy's remains were so his mother could finally lay her son to rest, particularly in the light of recent developments of the letter he has supposedly given to his mental health advisor about the location of the body, although this may just be another manifestation of his twisted mind. There is a documentary on C4 on Monday about Brady and the mind games and manipulation he has played and continues to play with his victims' families. He says he wants to starve himself to death. Personally I'd lock him in his cell and let him get on with it now that Winnie Johnson has died. And I won't watch the programme, I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of knowing he had an audience.

I don't think that there was anything exploitative about the planned Channel 4 documentary, but in any case it was announced tonight on Channel 4 News that the producers are currently deciding whether or not to still show it. I imagine that as they have been working closely with the family their feelings will be taken into account. There are very clear production guidelines about this type of issue

I'd also surmise that the contents of the alleged letter detailing the whereabouts of her son's remains will be a ruse, just from having seen the footage of Brady with the police going over the terrain. Unless Brady and Hindley paced out distances from eg the road, it would be virtually impossible to locate, even with the best intentions.

Thank you to serial_apologist and ferretfancy. I understand that she was unaware of what he is saying and am so pleased that she wasn't told about it. I was only aged two in 1965 but still I can't bear even to see their names written. They aren't human.
