Almost the end of an era
The last time I saw him on television he was a shadow of his former glorious self, deaf and crumpled, vague and irascible (I was pleased to see the latter).
His volumes of collected essays are always worth dipping into, as are his earlier autobiography Palimpsest and his fiction and non-fiction.
It's probably my ignorance but his dying means that I struggle now to think of an example of the great stylish American liberal commentator, polemicist and scourge currently at work
