"If you've not done anything ..."

" ... then you've got nothing to worry about, have you?!"

Another sorry example of police malpractice it seems ... (not the Met this time, refreshingly)

Rizwaan Sabir was held for seven days without charge as a suspected terrorist after police allegedly fabricated evidence

I imagine the WM police said that they were very sorry, and sent him on his way with a goody bag.

What is it with the WMP?

They also like making life difficult for footy fans rather more than other forces.
P'raps they need to listen to some Rattle or ELO and chill out a bit.

ELO? In the same sentence as Simon Rattle?

Hmmm, I suppose both were in the West Midlands, in the 1980's

Of course he'd done something - he committed the offence of being a Muslim, and/or being brown

Well ELO recorded Roll Over Beethoven, and Rattle rolls him over quickly when rattling through his symphonies, as for Black Sabbath Paranoid comes to mind, but as I'm feeling sleepy now I'll settle for the Moodies On the threshold of a dream!

I never understand - well I do because the police have near immunity - how actions like those don't constitute perverting the course of justice. Instead we get the usual stuff about "misconduct":

"While certain aspects of his complaint were upheld, investigating officers found there was no case to answer in respect of misconduct."

Perverting the course of justice, in Canadian, English, Hong Kong, and Irish law, is a criminal offence in which someone prevents justice from being served on himself or on another party. It is a common law offence carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Perverting the course of justice can be any of three acts:

                  Fabricating or disposing of evidence
Intimidating or threatening a witness * or juror
                  Intimidating or threatening a judge

                  Also criminal are:

                  (1) conspiring with another to pervert the course of justice, and
                  (2) intending to pervert the course of justice.

How do they not apply here? (* In the Jean Charles de Menezes case, aside from lying through their teeth about pretty much everything afterwards, there were multiple complaints from witnesses of intimidation in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. But anyone who has had any dealings with the police at a demonstration know it's common. low level, practice. 'You don't want to get into trouble, do you?')

When a person or group of people are arrested "On suspicion of Terrorism offences" it always seems to be headline news.
Less so when they are released without charge.
I wonder if there are any surveys on this aspect of the subject.

Mark Duggan was murdered in Noth London by a police officer a year ago and still there has been no inquest. His family was ignored by the Met on the day and have not received adequate information about Mark's death. Later that evening a march on the local police station took place and these events rapidly led to the August 2011 riots.

These riots have been chewed over, experts have pronounced, Cameron has vowed etc. But Cameron has not said a word, as far as I am aware, about geeing up the IPCC and Met to get on with the investigation and reply to the family's and society's questions.

Mark Duggan's mother speaks of her fears as Mark's killer is on the loose, in a year when she has seen her son shot dead and her partner of 33 years die of cancer

Mark Duggan may not have been an angel but was he doing anything wrong on this occasion? What did the Met know? How did they know it? And why are they still silent?

This report updates what has been going on between the Met and IPCC and Mrs Duggan makes her very reasonable points

Pam Duggan says lack of information a year after death that sparked riots 'makes me think police have something to hide'

On the other hand, argues Simon Woolley, we all have a responsibility to tackle racist behaviour when we see it.

Simon Woolley: I was at the Olympic basketball game where Lithuanian fans racially abused Nigerian players. This must not be tolerated

The famous first line of Franz Kafka's "The Trial" come to mind:
"Jemand musste Josef K. verleumdet haben, denn ohne dass er etwas Böses getan hätte, wurde er eines Morgens verhaftet."
(“Someone must have slandered Josef K, for one morning, without having done anything wrong, he was arrested”)
