Fantastic race for the women and, historically a landmark as the first women to ever win gold in the olympics for rowing. The mens eights narrowly scraped home with a bronze after looking likely to get silver for a very short while.

And the stands were no doubt stuffed to the gunnels.

There will also be plenty of support from those watching television at home. Heather Stanning is a Royal Artillery officer. Many people joined the forces at the age of 18 knowing that mentally they could just about stand 22 years in Iraq, Afghanistan etc. They intended to leave with a well-deserved Immediate Pension, far less than a maximum pension, at the minimum age of 40.

This year, the Government has been systematically making them compulsorily redundant just days before their 40th birthday - in at least one case three days before. Many not only have time on their hands. They are suffering severe trauma from the broken promises, the rejection, the sudden return to civvy street and the need to find new work in the current climate for a further 25 years. The Daily Mail, not known for its socialism, has described Ministers in this context as "the real enemy within".

Craig Bellamy has waded into the debate about the National Anthem at a special press conference. He has decided on behalf of everyone else what should happen - (a) he will not be singing the National Anthem and (b) he requires all ordinary spectators in Wales to respect the National Anthem and in no way must they boo. So that's told us. Rampant egotism is alive and well.

Yet again the ladies rescue GB from ignominy, eh Anna?!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Indeed they did Cali (although I don't think they were particularly diminutive!)

Only for raspberries, mercia. On the way back, I bumped into my old next door neighbour who in appearance and demeanour is Bradley Wiggins. It is clearly some sort of omen but quite what I really don't know.

I am now finding these Olympics really inspiring. Only yesterday, I thought that I might take up badminton as I genuinely feel that it is a sport in which I'd have a natural ability to lose.

                    He chose the latter.

Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and put the matter beyond doubt
You got there first, amsey .. that hilarious Redwood farce did cross my mind during this discussion ...

And the good news is that the four pairs of players - two from South Korea and one each from China and Indonesia - are out of the Olympics after their matches on Tuesday where they played to lose in order to get easier matches in the next round.
Edit: No cycling medals for the women today, Pooley came 6th and Armitstead 10th.

That was a slow burn, ferney - but I loved it when I got it

Sir Seb will doubtless tell us that the aisles are packed to the pew-ends.

I deliberately didn't use the adjective!

                              Ferney's on fire this week.

                              Yours, &c.

Gold for Wiggo, Bronze for Froome!!! Hurrah!

And when the win was confirmed he got on his bike again and cycled back out to salute the fans on the street. What a smashing bloke he is! And now the most Olympic medals any Briton has ever had, 7
