    IPSOS/MORI poll for BBC radio

Just had someone at the door conducting an IPSOS/MORI survey for BBC radio & commercial radio. Unfortunately I fell outside his required demographic - men aged under 35 & under 25 . I did try & persuade him that the grey hair was premature aging, brought on by the new puppy, but he wasn't convinced

In another life, I did the g & e thing for a bit, many years ago. It's stopped here now, but still going on there? (I'm now a Highly Respectable Employee of a HMG Department )

It used to be great fun visiting people at home. Once I knocked on a door which was ajar....

"Who's that?" a man in the house shouted.

"It's mangerton, from (name of very well known energy supplier)".

"(name of very well known energy supplier)? Well you can **** off!"

And the women were often worse.

Flossie..... how can you be under 35 & under 25? Shurely you have to be one or the other.

I did one on New Year's Eve for the BBC - the Brand and Reputation Tracking Survey. They told me I didn't have to actually watch television or listen to radio - I had to give my 'impression' as an answer to the proposition:

On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is Strongly disagree and 10 is Strongly agree, rate the statement:

The BBC has high quality programmes and services

I tried to persuade someone, not altogether successfully, that there was a world of difference between that statement and:

BBC programmes and services are of high quality

and that the first one was weighted to get a more positive response.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

If you thought that was bad then mosey on down to Annex 1 at the bottom of this report. Do you understand it? I don't! And talk about loaded questions. http://www.culture.gov.uk/images/pub...ort_July12.pdf

The interesting point to me was how people interpreted the questions in different ways (and you can add to that that they can/will interpret their own answers in different ways (e.g. What does a '6' mean? What does a '7' mean?).

I can't face reading the whole thing, but off the cuff I was struck by the section on the 'impact' of digital switchover which included the consumer's 'benefits' (unspecified) from digital radio but not the 'disadvantages' (unspecified). The only consumer disadvantage considered was the cost of buying a new radio. Nothing about the audio quality, for example.

Oh there's a whole lot worse buried in there, FF. The whole 'benefits' case is built on shifting sands and does not bear any rational scrutiny. The current set of documents presented to us for 'comment' is based on the PwC report ...the online version being heavily redacted. But fear not, this intrepid reporter has requested an unredacted version under FoI and also via my MP.

There is another point inherent in this. For what reason would you ever frame a research question to which you only wanted to hear responses from the younger audience without any interest in the older audience? Yes, yes, I know that might want to know… etc. But why to the exclusion of the obverse of the coin? Heads and no tails? It smacks of that well known grail of Youth.

(And still no detail of the puppy. Breed? Sex (presumably not yet)? Age?)

Well, he might have managed to get his quota of 35+ respondents (especially as he called in the afternoon, when the under 35s & 25s were most likely to be at work)
