Well, following vinteuil's link on probabilist, it said 'probabilism provides a way of answering the question about what to do when one does not know what to do'. And I came up with the answer - find someone who knows and follow them.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yes these folk are utterly and obscenely horrible without a shadow of a doubt ... though I suspect 'bigotry' is not entirely one of their particular 'exclusives' in relation to the competition.

Pure bunkum - or, as we say here, mince.

I take it that by 'the truth' you mean 'the truth about the Catholic Church's teaching about homosexuality' scotty?

It certainly says a lot about the Catholic Church (as opposed to Catholics )

Well Cardinal Keith has an air of one at the end of his tether, I'd say. He's not handling this at all well, getting quite over-wrought

Good good, scotty - I wouldn't want to ascribe that unusual antediluvian mind-set to the wrong religious sect.

I see it's not be revisited since 1986, which was around the time that the Tories were developing section 28, when people like the chap who wrote this must have thought that they were home & dry.

                    Shame, eh?

Goodness, amsey, the world is not entirely populated by homosexuals ... can't you give the overwhelmingly heterosexual population a little space now and again ... ?

THE truth ..... ooops i've gone all stewart lee (again).

i understood your intentionally donating your autonomy, in having a lean on someone else's argument french frank ....in order to demonstrate what you were saying about the church's philosophy on doubt....but it got a bit lost amongst other subjects where people were posting 'in character' (rather than out of). but glad you explained the subtle difference ......in the end!

anyway, back to THE truth...darn it - only had one truth to remember yet i've forgotten it already oh well, it can't have been all that important then!

i wonder if jean has a link to julie and peter in the observer, or should i have a search myself? perhaps best not to actually, it's never a good idea to get annoyed near to bedtime. perhaps best saved for tomorrow! i definitely wouldn't want to risk dreaming of julie & macaroon that'd be nightmare material, much worse than eating mature cheddar before sleep..... surely!

That's the most coherent and logical argument in favour of gay marriage I've yet heard to date ...

It does strike me as odd, to say the least, that we have churches with a considerable number of gay clergy when gays have been described by the Pope himself to be intrinsically disordered. These selfsame gay priests are nevertheless expected to carry out religious marriage rituals for heterosexual couples while forbidden to have religious partnerships themselves. Why are these allegedly disordered people permitted to do this?

                            Bring back the Inquisition !

Perhaps it's a bit unfair to make fun of someone's dodgy syntax and grammar when there's a serious issue at stake.

Unfair indeed if true. I treat a post on what it contains, not what I consider to be acceptable syntax and grammar. I'm certainly no English teacher.
In fact, unlike some here, I rather enjoy the different styles of expression from various members,

Talking about the English language, anyone here who is confused about the meaning of 'marriage' simply needs to 'google' the word in his/her favourite browser's search engine. There doesn't seem to be much confusion over definition whicheve⁥r dictionary one consults. Apart from matters of sex, it also suggests combining two different elements (like a screw and a nut) rather than a 'partnership' which implies initial similarity.

Away from all the bile and hysteria about consistent and long-standing Catholic teaching, the straight-talking if rather rough-edged O'Brien (an original son of Belfast, who probaby knows more about genuine bigotry than most members here) has actually got it absolutely right!
