Sibelius 8th on Radio 4 this morning

I'm not sure whether anybody has mentioned this programme on Radio 4 at 11.30 a.m. today, which includes a performance of recently discovered extracts from the 'missing' 8th symphony.

Many thanks Northender, it otherwise most certainly would have escaped my attention

      Mine too!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'll be out, checking out alternative employment, but will catch it from the iPlayer later.

I heard some of these before. Could be a short programme.

Nothing serious I hope Bryn - best of luck anyways

            Cheers for the alert, Norths

The 3 fragments are some 2'30" in total (starting at 2'07" and finishing at 4'44" following the interview -in Finnish).

Sibelius is one of those composers who can say quite a lot in quite a short period of time...
'Extracts' is how they are described in the Radio Times.

Another discussion plus a performance of the 3 fragments is scheduled for the interval of Prom 5 (Strauss-Saariaho-sibelius), Tuesday July 17th

Nothing too serious, just checking out an alternative due to a rather negative turn in the ethos of the operation I work for since it was taken over, with new management, last year. I was/am also fed up with the longer, more time consuming, more expensive journeys to and from work which accompanied the takeover. The meeting with new prospective employer this morning went well enough. Still not made a final decision on whether to switch of not though.

I did manage to catch most of the Sibelius programme on the car radio during the drive back from the interview. I do wish they had not talked over the brief extract from the sketches.

Yes, that was a bit annoying, but you can hear them in full next week (see # 9)

Bryn, this was the whole of one of the fragments. The two others weren't used during this broadcast at all.

I found it bizarre--surely it was the main point! It sounded intriguing, but I do wonder if Sibelius had anywhere left to go after Tapiola and the Seventh Symphony.

                              Here is the R4 programme:

The best of the BBC, with the latest news and sport headlines, weather, TV & radio highlights and much more from across the whole of BBC Online

Fascinating. Mark Elder crops up again as the BBC's eminence grise!! The fragments we heard show Sibelius experimenting with a 'new' harmonic language, and if they really were part of the destroyed 8th, what a symphony it would have been.
