    A sort of Newbie

    Greetings!

I thought the old order had been swept away with Platform 3 and other Beeb places being tumbrilled off in November, 2010 but by serendipitous chance, I find myself here amongst many names new to me but, reassuringly, a lot remembered from better days. The old sites are still in my Bookmarks and continue to provide much intellectual nourishment or, as with King Kennytone of Gutbucket Five fame, ridiculously silly appeal.

I had been hoping to find a parallel with Belphil's Organ Page but nothing so far, although my search time has been limited. Delighted that DracoM and his choristers are still in the stalls but I should be grateful if anyone can steer me towards the home of organ threads.

Since last appearing in public, I have taken up English full-circle change-ringing. There must be others here engaged in this singularly recondite activity.

    Best wishes,

    Cornet IV

aka Peregrine Overalls and Gaspard de la Nuit.

Welcome back indeed. I feel sure you will soon recognise the style of many contributors' messages here, even if the noms de plume have changed.

Morning, Cornet! I thought I recognised the name a few moments ago when I logged in.

We managed to set up this forum in the final week of the old MBs and so were able to notify people there, but some - like you, presumably - weren't around and others decided to call it a day with messageboarding. Nevertheless we have a nice mix of old-timers and plenty of new friends, and the boards are flourishing.

Unfortunately, the BBC won't give us a link on the R3 website (dunno why ) but they still cast the regular inquisitive eye on proceedings!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

We manage to find some sources of gentle amusement too!!

Welcome back - I remember 'Gaspard' vividly from the old R3 message boards...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

            Oh yes! Welcome back Gaspard!

Is the Cornet as in brass instrument or full of delicious gelato?

I have often wondered if you were a reincarnation of Kennytone, Calum

Welcome back, Cornet! It is both erudite and amusing here. The rougher elements went to the new R3OK message board

True, to the great misfortune of r3ok. But so rough were they that they got themselves barred and now lurk in the lowest circle of hell, gnashing their teeth and cursing

so not on Beef Oven's rock/fusion/electro/dub/whatever thread?
                          Shame.

Good heavens! I'm flattered that my modest contributions of the past should so widely have been remembered.

However, the answer to the question is "Neither". Cornet is a pipe organ stop, actually a compound stop comprising four (hence the "IV") ranks of pipes of different pitches. It is not a solo stop - it sounds pretty horrible on its own - only being used in combination with fundamental ranks or combinations to which it can add a wonderful dimension and brilliance. Just wot I hope to bring to the forum like, know wot I mean?

As for Gaspard de la Nuit, best not to go there!
