Oh that's terribly cunning, not to say quaint, S_A!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Are lady architects - assuming there ARE any - not allowed to use a public space to comment on their male colleagues' attributes? Incidentally, the relative merits of the Shard and the Gherkin were discussed at the start of last Sunday's DID - the guest being architectural critic Charles Jencks.

Talking of which, it comes as a surprise to me at least to realise that with antenna and all, the Eiffel Tower is actually considerably taller than the Shard:

            Eiffel Tower 324 m (1063 ft)
            Shard 309.6 m (1016 ft)

Am I the only one who's surprised by that? I supposed the ET is so familiar in its context that I've lost awareness of its sheer height.

(Leaving the antenna out of the equation, the structure itself is marginally shorter than the Shard: 300.65 m (986 ft) for the Eiffel Tower compared with 304.1 m (998 ft) for the Shard)

I imagine most giants would find the Eiffel Tower equally uncomfortable, S_A...

Well from the cafe i'm sitting in now
                      i'm rather liking it
and it's certainly infinitely preferable to this monstrosity

I've no idea, but you're always welcome to discuss anything on here.

Indeed - with the exception of the porch, which looks like it's been nicked from anywhere along Collingham Gardens in Earl's Court, then bleached, and the annex at the back, which looks as if it's been nicked from a standard local authority architect's guide to designing cheap fire stations, the building doesn't appear to acknowledge any advances in architectural style beyond about 1830.

                            but surely there are none!

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Well there weren't any developments (a better word than "advances" ? IMV) in Music of any significance so I guess the same is true for architecture

wherever that fire station (?) is I bet it doesn't dominate the surrounding 100 square miles
