I've just seen in the papers, re the Closing Ceremony, photos of The Spice Girls rehearsing ....... now that will be total misery but perhaps, maybe, Posh Becks might manage a smile? I just hope they don't wheel out Macca again, he's proved with the Opening and the Jublyee that he's 20 years past his use-by date. Good news is that Madness will be there.

Feed me the lines, Anna, and I'll make the obvious comment. MADNESS has never been far from this event since 27th July.

As for Mrs Beckham smiling, why should she break the habit of a lifetime?

to escape the olympics i went to a festival, i found a box of tapes in the 'roots' tent that were going 5 for a £1.00...which is where i found iranian singer, writer and editor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shusha_Guppy i looked up the singer's son darius, ..which led directly back to the buffoon, macaroon and crew!

I've watched the individual dressage loads of time, Charlotte Dujardin (disregard her poncey name, she left her comprehensive at age 16) winning the gold, and, the only routine perfectly matched to the music. So, I've now bumped you load of misery guts up.

I take it you've never been a gardener, Scotty? So you won't know about the sheer hard work, dedication, frustration & occasional pleasure involved in bringing a probably unpromising piece of ground to productivity, over several years of feeding & building up the soil, planting fruit trees & waiting for the first crop - all of which is wasted & destroyed when plots are closed & sold off. Then there are the health benefits (physical and mental) from the physical activity, fresh air, companionship, and the pleasure of eating food you have grown yourself (compared with which the fleeting 'feel-good factor of the Olympics and its dubious legacy pale into insignificance). Strange that this activity that you so casually dismiss, is becoming more popular, with waiting lists now so large in some places that it's unlikely that many on them will actually get a plot.

You're dead right, Floss, I've never been a gardener, but do hope all your potential ones finally get the plot.

Hey, what about an Olympics event for GARDENING, would you be happy (or at least a little less miserable) then ... ?

Will they do whatever before you go-go?) and Tinie Tempah (who he?) the LPO and The Who (Yawn!!) Blimey, why don't they wheel out Rick Wakeman or Phil Collins and bore everyone to death? Why not, if they are going down the Retro-Route, Kate Bush or Depeche Mode, Dr. Robert & The Blow Monkeys, Morrisey, Stone Roses, Echo & The Bunny Men??? Pet Shop Boys would be so brill!! And what about Marc Almond? Let us hope that at least Robbie Williams will be there ...........

It seems that Mr Wright has difficulty in differentiating between projects which are essential for life (reservoirs), projects which improve life for the populace in general (railways and motorways), and projects which are neither (sports stadia).

Not at all. I was always an opponent of the M6 Toll (just see how little traffic use it now) and now the proposed HS2 railway.

Considering it's a toll road, like to get from A to B, the number of junctions and link roads built ruined the whole district around Tamworth and Lichfield, now it's very difficult to get around the counties. And as for HS2 well, it apparently will reduce the train journey from London to Birmingham by 22 minutes, but likely won't significantly reduce total time from home to destination, indeed those times may become longer. Oh, if I go on I will sound like a misery
