"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

So has Lesley Garrett in a Union Jack frock doing an unaccompanied National Anthem next to the podium...

        Embarrassing.

Yes, very sad, but well done Ernie, and Adam Scott was so gracious in defeat. Delighted to say there were no moments of excruciating embarrassment. Golf appears to be the only sport where competitors are able to behave properly.

BBC 1 has now been switched off in mangerton towers for the duration of the Olympic commercialfest.

That was exactly my impression, mangerton. Scott was so gracious and philosophical in defeat, and no embarrassing tears of disappointment and self-pity ... very refreshing!

Wasn't it just!! But news today that Boris Johnson is to recite an Ode, in Greek, at the opening ceremony:
The Mayor said: 'I am delighted to have the opportunity to declaim Dr D’Angour’s glorious Olympic Ode at the Opening Gala, a work that breathes new life into the ancient custom of celebrating the greatness of the Games through poetry.

“I have no doubt that the members of the International Olympic Committee are fully versed in ancient Greek, but to ensure the elaborate puns can be fully appreciated I shall have the pleasure of vocalising the Ode twice, once in Greek and then again in English
                      Looking forward to that!

Dire warnings about the potential for Olympic traffic delays today.....on the A303....near Taunton !!

                              Edit...I didn't make this up.

Incidentally, I guess Locog, or the taxpayer, shelled out for those big electronic signs abut every 5 miles from Andover to penzance.
                              Madness.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

When I were a nipper, large posters used to adorn the railway embankments from Waterloo to your part of the world, teamsaint, proclaiming, "You will soon be entering the Strong Country". One had visions of big, burly men in sheep skins holding scythes and pitchforks, barring further progress to anyone hailing from beyond the reach of that rich, west-of-Basingstoke brogue.

                                It was beer, wasn't it?
