& the alleged bottle-throwing man was given a hefty whack on the back by someone not trained to use force. Actions have unintended, and unknowable, consequences. In the case of Ian Tomlinson it was his death. Fortunately for the alleged bottle-throwing man he didn't, AFAIK, he didn't have any underlying medical condition.
Don't get caught up in the herd mentality, Ams.

And for some broader context -
Parkinson's disease sufferer, 54, held by police at Olympic cycling road race 'because he would not smile'
Former soldier Mark Worsfold was arrested for his 'manner, state of dress and proximity to the course' as cyclists came through Leatherhead, then detained and questioned for five hours.
Mark Worsfold, 54, says he was handcuffed by Surrey police officers 'for not smiling' while watching men's cycling road race
Laura Bowey, head of information and support at Parkinson's UK:
"Despite affecting over 127,000 people in the UK, people with Parkinson's are subject to chronic misunderstandings and misconceptions about the condition. All too frequently people with Parkinson's tell us how are they are accused of being drunk, or acting suspiciously as they go about their daily lives".
No comments yet from Lord Coe.
Would it have been clear to those near the bottle thrower that he was drunk rather than disabled?Last edited by Guest; 09-08-12, 11:44.

congratulations old grumpy, your thread was 'just the ticket' during the olympics, it's been a
evidently, it's not just a competition for tickets, nor merely a sporting competition, spectators compete, make a formation of sorts (in their subtle ways) once inside the venue ....(according to my sister who attended).
drunk rather than disabled? precisely lat, as per subjects covered on file on 4 etc ...hair raising and very disturbing stats on bullying, abuse, deaths, injuries in this specific context.
male or female violence stinks.
from the opposite, perpetrators pov, i just think what a triumph lord coe praising the woman's 'instinct' and the media picking up the baton might have, as an encouragement on what neighbours call 'the hulk'. the hulk regularly visits a family in our street. i've seen her 'instinct' a couple of times now, and it's patchy at best! though initially i did admire her outburst towards a student, who'd punched his girlfriend full in the face thinking no one would notice, as it was 4am. (the hulk absolutely destroyed him verbally by bellowing through his letterbox, and hammering on his door, while he hid in his house presumably terrified, she was enticing him to 'come outside and punch her in the face, and she'd flatten the muppet' ....). meanwhile, another neighbour alerted by her shouting called the police......which was the correct procedure, buthad she not shouted would not have happened. however, seemingly quite a bit of her 'instinct' is just bonkers, exploitation of her specific build....she is terrifying, but it's a bit of cyclical pattern....so i assume she must be addicted to this approach, seems unfortunately to apply instinct, regardless of circumstances.
on this occasion, coe seems to be trying to twist 'instinct' to fit 'the big soc' at work magic trick, imv = risky. coincidentally, this morning, 40% more cuts to the police are announced unfortunately. long term, is the plan to frighten the living daylights out of people? perhaps so that the well off are easier to herd into gated areas?
besides, the image of sports audiences is at stake, and obviously it's not always a good one by a long chalk. in what way does this praise help? why might it be ok for one person to be violent, and another deemed 'a public nuisance', and who decides? certainly not mr coe, and the guardian, that's for sure.
due to these aspects, and the complete absence of 'bursting and screaming' skills, i think i've got most in common with golfers ......and pacifism! (even though the sport is otherwise unappealing - soz jc, mangerton, etc no offence, what ruins it is that tiny white ball - why not get a bigger one for goodness sake, it'd be quicker ).

Whatever the overruns on time and cost, one thing the London 2012 Olympics is certain to deliver is a huge public debt. The enormous bill for two weeks of telematic sport is legitimated by promises of urban regeneration but in reality the games are a corporate landgrab facilitating the looting of nature and labour as prices go up and people are pushed out, argues Mark Saunders
was a darn good insight too.

It's ironic really, a few gleefuly start the Olympinonsense thread, but clearly the real nonsense is in their own postings- - -

Bonkers Boris is at it again - http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2...m-school-sport
He wants schools to have two hours of compulsory sport a day as part of the 'legacy' of the Limpic Gains. He doesn't seem to understand that the new-found enthusiasm for sports is largely confined to cheering other people on from a comfortable seat, & will dissipate once the whole farrago is finished.
" I would like frankly to see the regime I used to enjoy, a compulsory two hours of sport every day – that's made me who I am."
Well, that's enough to put any sane person off the idea (& indeed Cameron is marking the 'success' of the games by abandoning Labour's commitment of schools having two hours of sport a week)
