Well, thank you, OG (but I'm not sure what it is that I 'set up'?)

The 750th post! Is it not bronze for team GB?

There seems to be a hell of a lot of pleasure going the rounds for many folk especially when we win six golds in a day ...

Isn't it time the anti-Olympic miseries now gave it a rest?

So far this event has been almost an unqualified success and the cynics (including sometimes myself) have been well and truly vanquished.

Talk of dire-planning and mismanagement in the Olympics pleasure gardens is a bit like suggesting there shouldn't be a London Underground because of a signal failure on the District Line.

        God Save Jessica Ennis!

Excellent. A far better performance than the divided men's football team. It just goes to show what a united forum can do.

By the way, do we all agree that the success of Team GB could be down to a more subtle kind of steroid?

Something calling itself a 'Pleasure Garden' should have a few plants, & be pleasurable. That looks like a pub car park on the North Circular.

You're on the wrong thread, Scotty - this thread is for those who can see behind the circus (or emerald curtain). A few medals don't make it any less a collosal waste of money. And as for what it's done to my favourite newspaper, I despair.

You've obviously never been to Margate.

Yes. Britcelt's "all you moaning minnies" comments might sit well in Twitterland where everything is "amazing". Has anyone stopped to ask how the bankers' etc emotions have been changed by the occasion? The answer is not one jot.

While the beach volleyball is wowing crowds at Horseguards Parade, shadowy conmen are in tower blocks planning the end of the country as we know it. That should be worrying to anyone who thinks it is already unrecognisable.

I reckon a silver medal in this event is possible if we train hard.

Well, credit where credit's due, it was Woolythinking1, no less, who introduced the phrase, but I readily agree that it does appear to contain at least a grain of truth ...

To have or has - that is the question; whether it's nobler in the mind to call a snap election to take advantage of the current feel-good factor or wait a while for Team GB to produce yet more of that irresistible colour gold. No, of course not, nobody would be that cynical.

The lofty pinnacle of superior insight from which this judgement comes is a place which I also instinctively like to occupy - hence my name on this messageboard. On another board I used to call myself Enobarbus, the observer of Antony and Cleopatra's grandiose follies - "That truth should be silent I had almost forgot.” I am immune to phenomena such as the Lady Di hysteria but if I have to switch off some of the BBC Olympic coverage, it is not the events themselves but the overdone reaction to them which is the reason.

We went to the Olympic Park yesterday and had a fantastic day out. While those gold medals were being won we were in the handball stadium watching Croatia play Denmark. A group of superbly fit and skilful young men were relishing competing in front of enthusiastic supporters from their home countries but mostly English people - a lot of family groups - who had possibly never even heard of handball until recently let alone seen a live match.

To be less than enthusiastic about the commitment of the these young athletes and to think that it should always be left up to some other more stupid county to "waste" its money on organising these international events seems to me to be sour and perverse in the extreme.
