Well being a legal high-flyer, you wouldn't appreciate that bit, Cali

I thought Jon Snow was having a rather good time throughout that broadcast.

I'd forgotten how good Ch4 News is - I sort of packed in watching it when Elinor Goodman retired but I see that it's still a must-see programme in the schedules

This latest fuss got an airing on CH5's The Wright Stuff this morning....

Welsh footballer Ryan Giggs and Kim Little who plays for Scotland's female football team were both criticised for failing to sing the National Anthem last night.

....the weight of opinion deciding that if you've agreed to be part of Team GB you must just sing along. Only Janet Ellis and some of the callers dissented.

I agree with the majority. Either you are in Britain or you are not. She should be dropped immediately.

Takes you back to Mexico '68, Tommie Smith and John Carlos I say

It's a silly decision with a serious point informing it. England is the only country of GB that does not have a national anthem - get it sorted, Lord Lloyd Webber!

Yes I s'pose once you've made the Faustian pact you have to go the whole way with it.

Yes but she has signed up to a British team. If she wants to be Scottish, no one is stopping her. Ditto Giggs and Wales. Medal and God Save the Queen. No medal and no God Save the Queen. Their choice. A decision should be required of them.

Apparently the Northern Irish, who are looking forward to a new bloodbath in four years time, with preparations in that genetically flawed, warmongering region now already well underway, feel that it should be Team UK. Hard luck. It isn't.

The title is Team GB because it is supposed to include overseas territories all the way to the antarctic. The world doesn't revolve around Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. Why the hell should it? They are all in the middle of nowhere.

Blake and Parry provided a perfect one, if only some bugger would make it official!

Words fail me... [recovering slowly] ... I've always been quietly pleased that the UK has neither an official 'national anthem' nor an official flag.

At the Commonwealth Games, they use Land of Hope and Glory. I thought Giggs and Bellamy appeared petulant by their behaviour.

I'm with you there! Aspirational rather than smug, and a better tune.
Michael Flanders, presumably the lyricist in 'The Song of Patriotic Prejudice' ("The English, the English, the English are best / I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest") wouldn't have agreed with us, but that is a rare lapse of judgment on his part and can be forgiven.

May I draw your attention to an item on the BBC News website entitled ...no, that would spoil the surprise ... let's just say that it involves the Culture Secretary.

                          Let me help: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19001529

As many have said, London hardly needs to make itself known to the world. There is no one in the world that hasn't heard of it.

However, the country has already shown itself to be run by a bunch of clowns. Let it continue. It is a story that really needs to be told. And it will be - we can depend on our political lords doing so. Business won't be coming here - it will be laughing then leaving.

He really is a total and utter campanologist.

OMG, the Daily Mail is off again ... got temporarily fed-up slagging-off immigrants so now it's the Scots and Welsh ...

The 'problem' here is obvious. God Save the Queen is played when England play at football and is therefore now widely considered to be its anthem. The English are at 'fault' for hijacking the anthem for themselves . Therefore, neither the Welsh or Scots could reasonably be expected to sing it lustily. The latter particularly considering one of the insulting verses.

The players concerned merely stood there in an appropriately respectful manner. In any case, some England players don't sing the anthem either, so this is a typical chunk of utter garbage from the DM.

You have to hate the news sometimes.

This morning the main BBC headline was "London set for Olympic Games"

Now it's "Olympic ceremony just hours away"

What fatuous lazy stuff it is.

The phrase "set for [bla bla bla]" or "set to [do/announce bla bla bla]" is a real bugbear of mine - so often used to write a lazy pointless story from a press release before something has happened.

                                It's not news, it's PR.
