Having listened to the 'post-match interview' with the inane Gary Richardson, I'm not surprised that Murray sounds churlish and bad-tempered.

He'd just finished one of the biggest games of his life and this herbert sticks a microphone up his hooter and asks him what it all must have been like for his mum & dad.

Unsurprisingly Murray said "I haven't a clue" which seems entirely reasonable to me

Getting back to Wimbledon.....
I wonder whether the fact that Andy Murray doesn't really belong to what one might call the 'Tennis-Playing Set' (by which I mean well-bred, polite decent sorts to whom the social aspect of the game is at least as important as winning), might explain his unpopularity in certain quarters and also increase his chances of actually winning.
I loved the way he swatted aside the tactless question from Mr Richardson about his parents (who, in case Mr R hadn't noticed, were sitting well apart and clearly not communicating).

That was interesting. I did think initially that it was a typically offhand response from Murray. Momentarily I wondered if it might link in with his parents' separation. Then I thought that it was probably the competitor's block. The last thing that you need in order to win a final is to take on mentally the added baggage of parental anxiety and involvement.

And it is not as if his mother is the kind of woman who will watch it on the TV a bit nervously while doing her knitting. She has been a driving force and in a far more professional way than Gloria Connors with Jimmy. More like Richard Williams in that sense. He probably knows that she has admitted to feeling nauseous and even on the verge of a heart attack during his matches.

It is also notable that he has always kept his counsel on where he was precisely in the tragedy at Dunblane although he was in the school and due to go to the gym on that day. It has been said that Judy had given lifts in her car to Thomas Hamilton. The family believe that they have a role in fully repairing the town so that's an enormous lot of pressure there already.

The Lendl input was always likely to have led to a colder, more robotic, persona. Funnily enough, that doesn't appear to have happened visibly in interviews which seem much the same. There is quite a lot happening on the Team Murray bench. Loads of over-animation from Jez Green alongside Ivan the Stone. I couldn't begin to comprehend the sports psychology involved.

But this is a story about Lendl too. He was drawn to Murray because he has represented where he was and ended up at Wimbledon. I get the impression that he is wanting both to get a victory over the authorities and to make peace with them. He might even want with this venture to receive adulation from crowds who he alienated. All in all, it will be fascinating.

This is the same guy who recently said on the radio 'should we all now take Italy very seriously?' after one of the top international sides in the world beat Germany at the Euros.

When it comes to asking excruciatingly dumb questions, Richardson is only rivalled by the almost equally appalling Sue Barker.

You might have seen mercia the non-discussion the other day. John Inverdale cautiously suggested it might be the best of five from the QF or SF onwards. I have never known the pundits to be so willing to say nothing. Weakly, I think I will take their lead.
