Because I don't think a British man has won the championship lately? (I may be wrong, as I said I don't watch, but it's being patriotic isn't it?) Same as you probably cheer on England in cricket, footie or rugby. Same as I cheer on Wales even though they may be abysmal. Edit: I take my patriotism very seriously! Double Edit: I have no interest in tennis so won't say anymore but cannot understand why the English hate a player from Scotland, is he no good then?

My elderly parents are genuinely confused on this matter. They think it is politically correct to consider Murray Scottish and hence not really 'one of ours'. So then it all comes down to personalities.

This means that they are for Tsonga, not they had heard of him until this week. Generally they don't like the French but in terms of appearance they don't think of Tsonga as French. Hence he is ok apparently.

I don't cheer on any country in anything, Anna. I dislike nationalism in any form. I don't go to see a conductor, violinist or singer because he/she is British - do you? I judge people in any field (if judge is the right word) on whether I take to them or not as individuals. I certainly don't dislike Murray because he's Scottish - I dislike him because he appears to be dour, sour and generally unpleasant. He's good at tennis, but so are Nadal, Federer and Tsonga.

What do people who support tennis players because of their nationalty do about doubles? Doubles pairs are often of different nationalities. Nationality really isn't the point.

No, of course not, re conductors, singers, etc., that would be silly, but sports are different. Sports are tribal. The English love to defeat the French, the Welsh, The Scots and the Irish, the Welsh love to deafeat the English, the Scots the English, The English - love the defeat the Rest of the World as well of the above! Now, I don't have DAB so am going now, whether Murray wins or not, The Boy Done Good.
