    lest we forget....

t's quite a contrast with the severity of punishment meted out to those guilty of more visible crimes, starting with the 1,292 people jailed for their part in last summer's riots, including the man imprisoned for six months for stealing bottles of water worth £3.50. There was no question of the authorities lacking a proper remit then, nor did any rioter have the chance to tell a parliamentary committee it was time we all moved on.
    graun
they argue against a Leveson type of enquiry because the exposure at the press enquiry has been both powerful and potentially redemptive .... if we desire trustworthy and workable financial institutions to emerge from all this then we will need a public purging of accountability ...or else the boys and their chums will stitch it up again ...

has it not occurred to the schoolboys that all the convenient exits on the economy, on politics and constitutional reform, the press, the financial institutions, energy and climate etc .... are disappearing? .... there is only cold comfort left and precious little of that ... all nettles and no gloves, no exits only facing the trouble
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Frankly, It would only suggest that to complete morons or to those pour souls with a childlike outlook on such matters.

It merely suggests that at very least you do have a mind which is prepared to think for itself.

Whether or not or to what extent it might have occurred to any of them, for goodness' sake don't tell them; you'll only encourage them!...

That is so well observed. It is climate change without any human cause and these are simply acts of gods.

          Or not!

I've just walked four miles in the countryside around and then up Reigate Hill. Everywhere seemed unusually calm.

          Should we be worried?

Well I think I've signed it

Once I'd entered all my details it informed me as to what I was agreeing to and said it might take a week to email me letting me know.

"You didn't know - then you're still culpable"

And remember that Governor of the Bank of England isn't a job like any other; there appears to be a line of succession so that these people have been around the financial scene for decades, and they must know everything that's going on. Of course, you don't want a clueless person at the top but you don't want any one of the three wise monkeys either

                End of rant

Later: Have you noticed too how all King's latest pronouncements have taken the form of either sailing-based or weather-based comments. As though all this shenanigans is in some way 'natural', possibly forecastable but essentially unavoidable.
king can't really deny all knowledge of typically anti social traits of his own profession. evidently, as you obviously know , those ousted from the pecking order are now writing books describing their 'whacky time in investment banking'. r4 did a programme about 'sociopathic' traites particular to those in the finance industry, which included anonymous guests, all too wiling to 'tell all'.

even if king has been doing a lot of gardening, how might he avoid noticing a change in banking, from nick leeson, and the 'barings' collapse leeson bought about (single handedly) mid 90s onward? (there's a whole doc on leeson on utube btw). perhaps king hasn't got a pc, or a telly at home? (uncannily, leeson's clothing sells on ebay at vastly inflated prices, and his colon cancer turned out to curtail his prison sentence, only to miraculously disappear....)!

still this far, at least king doesn't make media appearances dressed as a gothic pixie as yet! not this week anyway - who knows...maybe next week he'll go for 'the garden gnome look' instead.... 'naturally' it'll fit as an excuse, and explain why he tends to use so many metaphors revolving around the weather? seemingly, any old manure will do - we're only the public!

Where is it they escape to? A suppository?

Of course Mervin knows all about it - he told us so on telly this morning in offering his reason for the non-necessity for an inquiry.

Be fair you've got to give them time to confirm your postcode details & feed them into the drone for your area, in case you should need :'taking out' (and I don't mean for a trip to Whipsnade )

Think I'm a deluded half-crazed paranoic? (steady scotty, steady )

The future is here and this is not a butterfly on your wall, as Israeli drones are getting tiny. Their latest project – a butterfly-shaped drone weighing just 20 grams - the smallest in its range so far – can gather intelligence inside buildings.

Marcus Agius is to resign as the chairman of Barclays, the BBC has learned. There will be an announcement on Monday morning, BBC business editor Robert Peston says.

Marcus Agius is to resign on Monday as the chairman of Barclays following the Libor inter-bank lending rate scandal.

Meanwhile Robert Peston has also been digging around Bob Diamond;s activities since 2008 and has discovered some astonishing/perplexing stuff about conversations between Bob Diamond at Barclays and Paul Tucker, deputy governor of the Bank of England:

In giving evidence on Wednesday to MPs about the Libor scandal, the most explosive part of the testimony by Bob Diamond, chief executive of Barclays, may centre on a telephone conversation he had with Paul Tucker, deputy governor of the Bank of England, in the autumn of 2008.

What a pointless petition. It will just be a waste of money and tell us stuff that we already know....namely that the bankers are among the lowest form of pondlife and make lawyers look like saints.

So what do you advocate intead, then? OK, a petition alone is likely to achieve little beyond what you say that it will, but if no one says or does anything, what will that achieve? Come on - tell us your recommended solution, please!

If Diamonds are indeed forever (and it is looking increasingly obvious that whatever Barclays did is the mere tip of an iceberg whose size has yet to be determined) and, as a consequence of the long-term findings of what will likely be an inquiry of a scale that will put Leveson well into the shade, confidence in the City fails to the point that it collapses altogether, the government will at least be able to dispose of any concerns about whether or not to hold a referendum about Britain's continued EU membership because EU might ultimately just feel that it's had enough of Britain and unceremoniously eject it from membership on the grounds of breach of contract; if that happens, I shudder to think what the lawyers' bills will add up to but at least I have a pretty good idea who'll be held liable for them, even though it'll no longer have, or be able to borrow, any money even to begin to settle them...
