Yes, exactly, you can imagine those BBs tittering about it afterwards (in the common room) unless it's sheer incompetence in media management (highly likely)... I don't think I've ever had less respect for a government in my life, certainly not since Thatcher (and my god, we've had a few...)

just terrible, they could easily have done the "no-one was available" thing, so to send her out as badly-briefed as that...
no wonder Paxman asked her "is this a joke?" I think he was aiming that comment beyond the immediate context of the policy, to the interview itself and her "superiors"...
...but I don't blame either interviewer for being ruthless - she is the government's representative and has to be treated as such.

Yes, I agree - you shouldn't be horrible to members of the Government. They should have asked Alan Titchmarsh or Aled Jones to interview her. (If they're a bit too mean for your taste, I suppose you could see if Gloria Hunniford is available).

Of course I don't mean that - as well you know, "Northender".

Or maybe you could explain how Titch and Jones would make more intelligent interviewers.

She could of course have said, "Why is the issue of whether or not I agree or disagree with the latest government U-turn of any interest to you or to the viewer... or for that matter, when I learned or didn't learn about the U-turn? Isn't it a matter of any interest that struggling businesses will at least find it easier to find the necessary cash to be able to transport their products to the various outlets where they wil be hopefully sold, or abroad; and that ordinary motorists will now be able to get around more cheaply as a result of this U-turn? Or does your salary not count in all this, Mr Paxman? And in any case, I was elected by my constituents. Who elected you to make insinuating pronouncements on this, that or anything else, Mr Paxman?"

If she had said anything like that she would have deserved everything she got from Paxman. She was there, presumably, as a government spokesperson, to defend this latest u-turn. If the government was so keen on helping struggling businesses or 'ordinary motorists' the u-turn wouldn't have been neccessary. It simply indicates, yet again, how incompetent this government is, constantly flailing around & performing so many u-turns that they must feel like a merry-go-round.

I felt sorry for Ms Smith also, and I'm apparently the only one who actually thought she handled herself pretty well on both occasions, being subjected to almost constant ridicule by both interviewers. If I had been her, I've have been sorely tempted to smack the thoroughly obnoxious Paxman on the face, and if she had struck that long overdue blow on behalf of the level-headed and sensible viewer she would now be a national heroine (or 'hero' if one insists).

Osborne's a rotten cad and bounder and should be summarily de-bagged or whatever else overgrown public schoolboys get up to these days ...
