    Radio 4 has been Ulysiezed!

Just looking forward to Counterpoint tonight to find that Radio 4 has been Wrighted, with regular programming replaced by a mini-Ulyssesathon!

Now where have I come across this before?

RTE in June 16th to 17th 1982? Only they really did it the Wright way, a continuous 29 hour 45 minute broadcast of a dramatisation of the complete text.

Never mind Ulysses, what about Anita Anand as presenter of Any Answers?

The rushed, breathless delivery, the awkward pauses and misplaced emphases... reminded me of someone with the initials KD.

Utter disaster. A favourite programme ruined.

Martha Kearney, Emily Maitliss, Eddie Mair, Nick Robinson...? All too busy or something?

          What is a "mini-Ulyssesathon"?

Had R4 abandoned its entire regular schedules in order to broadcast the entire work of Joyce, the implied similarities with Wright's composerthons would have been valid. As, instead, they've replaced only some of the regular programmes with dramatised excerpts from Ulysses, they aren't. The nearest similarity is when a broadcast of Gotterdammerung (a "mini-Ringathon"?) removes the Jazz programmes from R3.

My only complaint about this wonderful event is that it wasn't on R3.

YES! Such opportunities wasted: Joyce-themed Jazz programmes; Music Matters from Dublin; Hear & Now with works by Berio, Cage, Saunders, replays of neglected work (I've never heard the Roger Marsh) and new commissions.

Ho-Hum; maybe in a parallel universe?

and no again so a pointless, flawed comparison.

I didn't hear Anita Anand and Any Answers so can't judge the accuracy of the comments with regards to that but, given the above, would feel inclined to approach the programme with an open mind.

... do we surmise that "Word" is an agent, not only for Ms K Derham, but also for Ms A Anand??

One where modern music meant MODERN, maybe???

That said, I DID enjoy the Ferneyhough piano piece last night - and the Hugh Wood Second String Quartet on H&N which followed, though I magine he must have composed it a good while ago. As to the rest...

... and where a "macmillangeliebte" bemoans the paucity of broadcasts of bland Music?

Thanks for that: I'd forgotten that Lemma-Icon-Epigram was to be broadcast (it isn't mentioned on the website!) and Wood doesn't do much for me (every five years or so, I put on the Piano Concerto, optimistically .... ).

The Second S4tet dates from 1970.

They might even have stretched to Skalkottas' thunderous epic, The Return of Ulysses...but I guess, there's a couple of recordings, so it's back in the draw for another decade or two...

Was that on-topic, bit tangential perhaps? Word-up! Word-down!
