I have Collins' recordings of the Sibelius symphonies 3,4,6, and 7 on the original mono Decca LPs and very fine they are too. I think he was a pioneer in playing Sibelius's music at a time when nobody else did.

He looks, as displayed by the cover art, very forbidding: bald head, large cranium, trimmed beard and moustache, bow tie and probably dying to give the orchestra a hard time. Have any of you orchestral ancients memories of his conducting?

Sorry about that, I seem to be repeating myself, but there is nothing new in the second post. Slip of the fingers, I think.

Anthony Collins was also a composer and wrote the well known Vanity Fair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2F8DfklrJI

Never judge a book by its cover, eh?

Would Vladimir Ashkenazy be falling into this category now?

                Snap!

I was thinking exactly the same!

Yes, he's definitely a neglected, ignored conductor, IMV.

Thanks Beefy, you've saved me a few quid!! Probably spend it on something else!!

And yes, Ashkenazy is perhaps neglected but his Sibelius and Mozart piano concertos with the Philharmonia is well worth a listen. He has also recorded his own arrangement of the Pictures at an Exhibition.

Ashkenazy's recording career as a conductor isn't as prolific as it used to be, but he still crops up on ONDINE as a conductor (recorded an obscure Rachmaninoff opera last year) - and he joined the Philharmonia Orchestra (of which he is Conductor Laureate) - on their tour of Latin America last year. He's also Conductor Laureate of the NHK SO, and the Iceland SO - as well as Music Director of the European Union Youth Orchestra.

I'm thinking about the Cantebury gig, and I've bought a ticket for the RFH Rachmaninov Piano Concerto 3 & Sibelius 5, Nightride & Sunrise.

You'd be better off at Basingstoke, they will have had Canterbury to run through it all, plus you get a nice day trip to the Capital of North Hampshire.....Canterbury will be full of tourists that time of year........

( think I'll do The Basingstoke concert, thanks for the heads up !!)

I may take in the Basingstoke too.
