    Gurnemanz

Thanks for the film of Artur. Ispoke to him in the RAH in 1948, when passing him on the Artists' staircase.

He gave me and my friend a sweeping bow and chatted for some time. One of my pianist heroes.

I have just finished Harvey Sachs's Life of AR and whilst there is no doubt of his very, very great love for music his behaviour to follow humans was surely not of the best. Be it family, sometime friends and fellow artists - on finishing I couldn't get Auden's words on Wagner out of my head in that he..

"....may well have been the greatest artist who ever lived but he was also a complete s**t..."

Anton, I'm sure a lot of musicians of all ranks have very unsavoury or pathetic private lives but we, the public, don't have to concern ourselves with that too much thankfully.

I've only read Artur on Artur myself and don't think I'll let his private life get in the way of my enjoyment of hearing him play live in the past.

No, not good behaviour. Smittims made me laugh on the old boards with something like: Mrs.Merton says to the new woman "What made you marry[or live with] this multi millionare 89 year old? "

Surely the lady as always was totally innocent - she may even have been from the Garden of England!?.

Do you know if she did "score" in the will? The book was unclear?

It also seems that since then, unlike Lady Gould, she has "married well"!

I've only read the middle volume of his long autobiography Anton.

Perhaps they could dye the fake rain in the colours of the five Olympic rings. And then Ken Dodd might be wheeled out with the Diddy Men. Or the Teletubbies. Live.
