It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

No, sorry saly, never read any Agatha I think but, now, are we thinking of the same Mandy? Do you mean Peter M, Blair's Kingmaker? No, I mean our resident Obit Expert, dear old Mandy, the undertakers' helpmate, he'd be fun I think? I bet, close up, personal, he's as soft and sweet as a choccy Belgian truffle!

Remember that Larry cartoon depicting a couple in bed, helping themselves to sweets from a box labelled "After Sex Mints"? It was probably in private Eye.

Excuse me - is this the Radio 3 supporter's baiting agency?

On Roy Jenkins, I was a bit disappointed on seeing him "live". I spent about two weeks trying to talk staunch Labour supporters into accompanying me to the De Grey Rooms in York to see him. Ultimately they relented but were sceptical. By contrast, I had his books and often viewed him as the only possible saviour of the country.

For the whole of his speech he had the contents of his nose running down his face. One friend turned to me and said "he needs to blow his nose". At that point, I burst into the kind of laughter that is loud and wholly uncontrollable. I was going hot and cold and quite furious with myself.

At the moment that he realised there was a problem and kept looking in our direction, I just wanted to run out of there. It didn't go at all as I had anticipated. More recently I have read things which make me think he was a bit overrated. I am just pleased that it wasn't Shirley Williams who has been a trusted voice of reason throughout.
