    Dear Becca

I'm very sad to read your news and offer my condolences to you and your family in your sad loss.

I had a real sense of your father's kindness and musical knowledge from his postings. As I'm not too far from Salisbury I had hoped that we might be able to meet up some time, perhaps at a Mayflower opera night, and I'm sad that this will not now be possible.

Reading the tributes above on this thread I'm surprised and humbled to acknowledge how deeply a member of a virtual community can impress other members as though they had met in life - and I know that to be true for myself, albeit based on a rather modest acquaintance with his postings.

The Mahler seems a perfect choice for your goodbyes to a remarkable man.

With kind regards and in sorrow

I loved hearing about all Chris's enthusiasms drawn from long experience of concert going
and record collecting. Late night train journeys back to Salisbury did not deter him one jot.

I can't imagine listening to a Jiri Belohlavek concert in the future without thinking of dear Chris.

            Becca,

As another one of Chris's on-line friends I am deeply saddened by this news and greatly appreciate the time you have taken to come on here and inform us. We exchanged private e-mails each birthday and Christmas and I shall greatly miss his contributions to this forum.

Sincere condolences to you and your family.

            RIP Chris Newman

What very sad news . His posts were always a joy to read and what shone from them was that he was a true music lover and a gentleman . A terrible loss to our online community which self-evidently pales to insignificance against the loss to his family and friends . May he be sitting listening happily to the reunited DFD and Gerald Moore in the hereafter .

              RIP Chris .

Very sorry to hear this sad news and I send my condolences. Though I never met him I always felt that he would be immensely likeable from the things he wrote and the way he wrote them.

My condolences to Becca and the rest of Chris's family and friends. Like others here, I only knew Chris through his postings over a few years now, and he came across as a true gentleman, in both the actual and literal sense. At the same time, he was also unafraid to express his sincere opinions, which is a very potent and admirable mix.

No wonder you are so proud of him, Becca, as I'm sure he was of you. The bond between a father and daughter is very, very special and never dies, so I hope that will be a huge consolation to you now that your Dad is at peace and free from the cares of this world.

                    Chris, RIP

I've only just read Becca's message. This is indeed very sad, for his family and for this friends, including all of us. His integrity and courtesy were an inspiration and an example to us all.

Petrushka has drawn my attention to this announcement.

I shall be going to the funeral on Wednesday and will pass on the condolences of all. (Shall have to see if I have anything brightly coloured ...)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
