I have wondered how best to remember Chris this afternoon. As it turns out I will be waiting while my wife undergoes a chemotherapy session. There is a quiet place to sit and my thoughts will be with them both.

To my dad's friends,

I'm very sorry to let you know that my wonderful dad, Chris Newman, passed away last week after a major stroke. I know that he had made many lovely friends through this forum, and had enjoyed meeting some of you at concerts over the past few years. I will miss coming on here to see that he'd started some heated debate or was deep in conversation about a concert he'd been to or heard on the radio. He was so passionate about music, which was surprising as it wasn't a huge part of his upbringing - it was all self-taught. I'm grateful that he passed on this love to me, and am very sorry to not be able to join him at the proms this summer as planned.

When he was in hospital, I asked the nurses to keep Radio 3 on for him. He woke up during the Stile Antico concert and smiled when I asked if he could hear it.

If any of you are local and want to say goodbye, his funeral will be on Wednesday 30th May at 3pm at St Thomas's Church, Salisbury. Dad had requested Mahler 'Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen', and although I don't like recorded music in services, I think it only appropriate that one of his favourite singers, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, should sing it. If there is a heaven, I hope they bumped into each other at the gate.

Well, Chris's day went off under bright sunshine after a grey start. We came in to a live string quartet playing Il mio tesoro and Dalla sua pace (I think Chris said he once sang Don Ottavio) and we finished with Sonny Rollins' Don't Stop the Carnival

There was a live performance also of Mahler's Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, beautifully sung by a contralto who arrived at the church and departed again on her bicycle. Becca mentioned in her tribute how much Chris had enjoyed contributing to the forum - the first line of the Mahler was translated in the Order of Service as 'I am lost to the world with which I used to waste so much time': if we were that world Chris's time wasn't wasted on us - it was always highly valued. I learned a lot about Chris from his sister and from Becca in their tributes and none of it came as a surprise. Chris really was the man he seemed to be.

Apart from thinking of Chris this afternoon I did so again during this evening's War Requiem performance recalling the times when Chris told on here of his attendance at the performance of the same work that appears on the Giulini recording issued in BBC Legends. One of my favourite anecdotes from him, often told on here, was of his attendance at that famous 1968 Prom on the night the Russians invaded Czechoslovakia.

Chris's anecdotes, his love of Prague, his enthusiasm for Czech music, his wit and wisdom will all be much missed on here.

Yes; I played the BBCSO/Belohlavek Martinu Symphonies 4 & 5 this afternoon in remembrance of Chris' enthusiasm for this Music and these performances.
