Sadly they would go out of business
to be replaced by big factories churning out fake ones

look what happened to cheddar cheese ?

only a few real makers left ............ we are such idiots when it comes to getting on board with PGI status and have missed the boat on so many great regional foods.

At least we are talking about something that REALLY matters and is worth getting excited about ........ unlike the ruddy Jubilympics

If anyone wants a slight antidote to Jubilee-ity, have a listen to Will Self's Point of View on Radio 4 this morning:

The best of the BBC, with the latest news and sport headlines, weather, TV & radio highlights and much more from across the whole of BBC Online

          PGI is a con!!

As teamsaint infers, left alone, these industries would thrive. They would thrive because they are bloody good and have products that people want, not products that people are told they want. EU policies since the 70s have destroyed many a good product, like cheddar

If PGI is there, and works, I am sure we should use it.

But the EU is the problem, not the solution. Plenty of room for Premium products, and cheaper alternatives in properly free markets.

The EU is in the business of restriction. (herbal remedies, for instance).

Properly free markets would be wonderful - where small producers & sellers & large (giant) manufacturers & retailers work on the same basis. At the moment we have a 'market' skewed towards giant manufacturers.

As for herbal remedies, the new regulations simply say that if they are being sold as a medicine, then they should be tested & trialled in the same way as other medicines. If they don't want to carry out the testing, then don't sell them as medicines (they're mostly a con anyway)

Nonsense - plenty of examples excellent products that defy the supermarkets.

Speaking of which, I'm off to Morrisons now, they got Scottish salmon at half price. It's crap. but good enough for fish pie. In the week I will buy some proper Salmon from a non-supermarket vendor that has not, despite delusional thinking by some, been seen off by supermarkets!!!

The shop or the salmon? It's a supermarket I avoid as they force you to listen to annoying piped music. Supermarkets without such noise pollution seem to be Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury's (with the exception of the last one's Stoke-on-Trent strore)

                      :
That's not what the wonderful Rhubarb queen mrs Oldroyd told me

it's about time Boots were prosecuted for trades description infringement
they sell some things (like Arnica 6c) that have NONE of the substance described on the label in them
that's like selling a pint of beer that contains no beer and being allowed to get away with it

or even selling an ALW album and NOT saying that it's "borrowed" from Puccini (allegedly , he added )

Rhubarb is one of my faves. Think I might do a crumble for after the Arbroath smokies at the South Wits republican bash !!

Rhubarb is annoying though. If you want it to grow in a particular place it won't, and then it just appears somewhere else and grows like triffids. Odd.

                            Isn't 'odd' a lovely word?

P.S. I adore rhubarb, was brought up on the stuff!

My local Morrisons has got ENO's Ambient #46, 'Music For Chav Supermarkets' playing through the house system.

.......to answer your question, the salmon.
