Oh, dear; immensely flattering as our sentiments are if taken at face value, I fear that, in reality, this is far from being the case (if only it weren't!). And I apologise for the typos, too!

Or let's ask the Queen; after all, even if "we" were to get a dusty answer or (as is far more likely) none at all, at least "we" would have returned to the topic, would not "we"?

Speaking of HM the Q, incidentally, I once remarked to someone that, had she ever suffered the grave misfortune of flying with Monarch Airlires, she'd probably have ended up suing for defamation...

          Hilarious.

The long winter evenings must just fly by......

Even in this weather-beaten group of ever more loosely associaed countries that some of us still call Britain for the time being, those winter evenings seem not at last to have abated, more or less...

When a friend of mine died some years ago, we played a recording of the adagietto from the 5th symphony as he had requested, along with In Paradiso from Faure's Requiem. My gripe is not about the music, so much as the endless discussion of it, and the view put about by some that even the tiniest criticism is attacking something that is sacrosanct.
I sincerely hope that your funeral is still a long way off, who knows, by then you could be choosing Mozart ! ( Admittedly he's a bit of a cult too ! )

Well, thank you kindly - and, the best will in the world permitting, I'm not planning to shuffle off me mortal coil within the next few days or weeks - but I would not in any event want anyone to "discuss", let alone "criticise", my choices of music for my funeral either beforehand or afterwards, so hopefully your gripe would not apply in my case!

                  ahinton,

Thanks for your forbearance, I'm afraid that my feelings about the Mahler cult do get a bit out of hand. For the record, I do enjoy the earlier symphonies and the song cycles, but I guess that the emotional world of this composer doesn't touch me as it does others. No doubt that's my loss no doubt, back to Wolfgang!

It was quite a spectacle, wasn't it? Very impressive.

And there will be nearly 10,000 street parties over the Jubilee weekend:-

Latest figures reveal that councils in England and Wales have received almost 9,500 road closure applications for Diamond Jubilee street parties.

In an age when many people barely talk to their neighbours for much of the time,or even know who they are, it is great to see the Jubilee bringing the country together in this way. At last, something to smile about!

This weekend my street is having a street fair & barbecue. We also have a book club, & regular work parties in the communal gardens. Nothing to do with the jubilee. It's perfectly possible for neighbours to work together without having an event like the Queen's jubilee to promote it.

                            Just saying.

You might be a sad misanthrope but where I live we don't really need this nonsense to encourage us to get on with each other.
