I don't think that'll be long enough. The only answer is emmigration for at least a year. Australia, perhaps? They've got a strong republican strain.
(The worst-case scenario will be if Brenda kicks the bucket late in 2012 or early 2013. Then we'll get wall to wall - & across the ceiling too - tributes, funeral, mourning etc, followed by Charles's coronation - taking us possibly into 2014 )

George VII? Philip I?
As ahinton hints, there does seem to be serious debate about whether he will be acceptable - largely on account of his political meddling and his reported determination to continue the activity.

As to his acceptability or otherwise, I'm not so sure that he would or could be persuaded to step down in favour of the next in line on such grounds or indeed any other grounds, but what seems to be of rather more significance is the perceived acceptability of a continuing monarchy following the Queen's demise; as I've observed before, there are some who would wish to see it go and others who don't much care for its continuance one way or the other but who wish it to remain firmly in place as long as the present Queen is alive and able to carry out her duties.Last edited by ahinton; 24-05-12, 17:00.

Shameful. To think this is the same individual who presumes to lecture the rest of us on our morality.
Although as a very modest, private person she might have a clause in her will stipulating no public mourning, no lying in state, and a private funeral with no flowers. Absolutely no fuss.

If you doubt that there will be extensive, exhaustive & prolonged coverage on the death of HM the Q just look at what happened with Diana & the Queen Mother. I guarantee that there will be special editions of the Mail, Express, Times, Telegraph, probably the Sun & Mirror as well. Unfortunately the Guardian will probably join in . The Independent might be free of it, apart from a small paragraph on an inside page.

I think they are very insecure.
60 years could have been a small family affair() but its all "Love me, love me" and "sod the recession and unemployment, bake a street party bunting cake you peasants".
I blame the Normans.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
