What do you mean, it didn't?

Oh well, better luck next time.

For the BBC the whole thing was the one big plug many of us would happily have pulled out.

S_A, as others have pointed out, and unlike many a republic, this is still a free country and nobody was forced to celebrate or watch the Queen's Jubilee. There was plenty of other stuff on television, or you could have gone for a long walk or read a bit of Karl Marx, whilst sipping lemon tea, to cheer you up.

Why do you, Flossie, Amsey, Mr GG etc, get so upset about the existence of an institution that has the strong support of around 80% of the people of this country?

Surely you and the others are perfectly capable of recognising a total 'lost cause' when it's standing directly in front of you and staring right into your eyes ... ?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

My most favourite part of the jubilee was Steve Bell's 'If ...' cartoons - http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...ubilee-pageant

I was only a teenager at the time but I well remember a hilarious sketch on That Was The Week That Was in the 60s. I searched for it but it doesn't seem to be on Youtube. I found a description:

Frost came on strong as Dimbleby and ran a commentary: "It is becoming clear .. something has gone wrong" he oozed serenely .. "Royal barge ... is sinking". He goes on to describe in detail the dress she is wearing.

(I guess the Catholic church, "classical music" and the works of Bax are also "lost causes" then Scotty )

Surely even sticking pins in people gets boring after a while.

Your attitude is reminiscent of the bus driver who refused to carry a passenger on the last bus of the day because she was 20p short of her £5.00 fare and the bus didn't accept card payments...

Well scotty, just in my lifetime (1951- to date) we have seen a massive change in social attitudes to, say divorce, abortion, lesbian & gay rights to name but three.

So I remain both optimistic for change and thoroughly fed-up with the amount of effort and time devoted to bolstering up an outdated institution and that is required to get people like you up to speed

                          Back to the lemon tea

                              Remember Spain, am51!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think that the proud people of Spain have enough trouble on their plate just at the moment without my denigrating them or advocating on their behalf, french frank

I'll just carry on ordering from www.amazon.es as my way of supporting them
