It's also not a thread about smalling the Queen, it's a thread about the jubilee celebrations.

johnb's 'death wish' posting is very disrespectful to her Majesty and this forum, yet, presumably, has the blessing of FF. Maybe johnb might not be brave enough to post it on Twitter.

...and the tone of his rant showed symptoms of miserablegititis!

Easily the best critique I've read of the sodden (or sodding? ) affair. Who is Grace Dent? A descendant of E J Dent? She has a comparable tongue.

Sounds interesting, but all I can get from the link is the headline, no article?

                  Who is Grace Dent?

She was the regular critic on Big Brother's Little Brother, has worked on a series with Piers Morgan, and is the author of It's a Girl Thing, the Diary of a Chav series (including Trainers v Tiaras and Slinging the Bling) and How To Leave Twitter (My Time as Queen of the Universe and Why This Must Stop). In 2008, she was shortlisted for the 2008 Queen of Teen Prize when aged just 35.

                  Hope this clarifies.

Somehow I missed all of those. It underlines the narrowness of my world.

Elizabeth continues to cost the taxpayer millions a year at a time when unemployment figures have reached the highest in 17 years, 1 in 4 children live in dire poverty and benefits are slashed for the ‘undeserving’ poor. £32.1 million could be better utilised to support those most in need rather than throwing money at an unelected head of state which is the ultimate symbol of inequality.

Especially when she is accusing others for being too simplistic

The tourist argument is often used to distract people from the real issue that the monarchy is not value for money.

I am rather disappointed in The Independent (not about the opinions but the apparent lack of intelligent writers)

P.S. I’ve just read this bit, although the writer is decent enough not to mention equality.

Stability and unity are the products of a democratic country where power is vested in the people to elect an accountable Government and head of state. This is exemplified by the USA, a republic and one of the most stable and prosperous countries in the world.

The annual cost of the monarchy (2010 figures) is 62 pence per person.

I would be content to have a republic if democratic representatives convinced. Regrettably, they have gone backwards considerably since 1977 when assessed against any conceivable yardstick.

I find discussions like this ignore the Realpolitik of the situation. The facts of the matter are that the State has invested a huge amount in the Monarchy over the past few days, and whether one is for or agin the Monarchy on ideological grounds, one has to admit the Monarchy is a very potent force in politics, and increasingly in people's everyday lives (there was a report of a Radio 6 presenter (possibly pro-punk) nearly knocked over by a flag-wielding taxi).

So like or lump it, one has to come to terms with the Monarchy having an increasingly important role.
