A beaut from the Australian High commissioner just now, being interviewed by Simon McCoy.

McCoy: We have to say something about the weather [or words to that effect]
    Oz HC: It's a bummer, isn't it

    How refreshing.

This morning's service at St Paul's contained music that might actually have been of some passing interest to those on this Forum, especially after the inanities of the previous two days offerings.

Has no-one got anything of interest to say?

This has been a glaring problem in recent weeks. There's more and more attention-seeking, ill-humoured and sometimes less than amicable hostility that goes far beyond the reasonable limits of harmless banter. It's as though there are some who come to the forum looking for a fight, rather than to discuss Radio 3, classical music, jazz and drama. I hope that when the Proms recommence, there might be more than a passing interest in this great festival of music, and that this might channel primeval aggression into something more positive.

Jimmy Shand and the Proclaimers hail from there, and it was "Tannochbrae" in the STV 90s remake of "Dr Finlay". On a topical note, it appears in the fox hat joke:

Prince Charles is opening a new hospital in Auchtermuchty. He is dressed in a sober suit with a ridiculous hat with a real fox mounted on top of it.
After the plaque is unveiled, one nurse can contain her curiosity no longer, and asks him: "Why are you wearing that silly hat with a stuffed animal on top, your Royal Highness?"
"Well," explains the prince, "this morning, I told the Queen I was coming to Auchtermuchty to open a hospital, and she said to me, 'Auchtermuchty? Wear the fox hat?'".

An extremely well-prepared and enjoyable service. Apart from a rather bland new commission however, they stuck to some good old war-horses: VW, Parry, Walton. Should there have been something genuinely contemporary? Perhaps something by Sir Max - or, even better and reflecting the ecumenical nature of the service, something by James MacMillan. The Cwm Rhondda arrangement by the assistant organist was stunning - and seemed to send a shiver down William's spine (or did I imagine his smiles at the scrunches of the last verse?). A shame that the full variety of the middle verses of VW's "All people" did not appear - what's wrong with a nice solo trumpet?
Nice to hear Orb and Sceptre on the organ too - not a truncated version of Crown Imperial, like we had at the last royal wedding. It would be good to start a fashion for O&S at weddings - and make all the organists around the country struggle to learn it.

Is there something there to provoke a response, Petrushka?

Were Edgley Rob and I the only ones to have any interest in the music ay St Paul's this morning? Bit of a contrast with the so-called concert last night. Bit odd for a Forum devoted to classical music don't you think?

Was this morning's St Paul's service on Radio 3 then?

Agree about the missing trumpet in the Old Hundredth but what a thrilling sound it was. As ER said, best thing of the weekend.

And..........or is my memory misleading me?.......there should be a verse for choir only, with the melody in the tenor part.
I also enjoyed having real (ie non-military) brass players.
