I'm not a monarchist but I have a huge amount of respect for Queen Elizabeth (the rest of them are, quite frankly, a bunch of ******* who I would gladly consign to The Tower) but I intend to watch the pageant as a spectacle plus an interest in messing around in boats (plus it's a miserable wet and soggy day here)

Surely she is also responsible for how things are ?
I can't go along with this idea of her as this benign force for good who is trapped by her circumstances
I've nothing personally against the woman but if I "messed up" my children like that I would certainly deserve more than a little criticism.
She seems a rather sad figure to me who would be better off abdicating and living somewhere in the country with a few horses ............

There's a "highlights" programme at 8pm. Sounds like a more bearable way to watch the spectacle (with a finger on fast-forward).

I expect your children would be 'messed up' if you had greeted them with a distant hand-shake when they were tiny.

How do you work that out? The Monarchy have no power, cannot pass laws, have no influence whatsoever. It's the politicians who are responsible for how things are (and the electorate who voted for them of course) I'd rather see the Houses of Parliament blown up than The Queen!

I mean how things are with her own situation
                    and children
she could have chosen to be a bit more empathetic , for example ..............

And if you think they have no influence wait till Charlie gets in charge he is already a meddling buffoon ....... at least you can say that the people of London chose Boris

For the rest of us- the great majority in the country- it's a day of fun and celebration. I have been watching the coverage on Sky News and, despite the weather, the banks of the Thames are lined with hundreds of thousands of people all having a bloody good time. One of the points about the Pageant is that boats and ships of all shapes and sizes are taking part, from Tall Ships, via what is believed to be the oldest sea-worthy ship still in existence, to the little ships of Dunkirk right down to narrowboats, skiffs, and kayaks. It will be a wonderful, never to be repeated spectacle, and I shall be watching it all before going on to a street party down in the village.

You stew on it all like a grump, reading your Independent.(You might just have nudged their circulation up into double figures...). The rest of us are having a party.

I am hesitant to get involved in this custard-pie throwing contest. Despite being a reader of the Independent, I am fairly neutral about the monarchy. Charles is a local resident and we regularly attend the marvellous Music in Country Churches concerts (eg two weeks ago in Fairford) which he actively supports and we have even bought stuff in his over-priced shop in Tetbury. Crude flag-waving posts like the above are only liable to turn me into an ardent republican. I am very happy to be English but have never felt the need to be ostentatious about it. This afternoon we have decided to visit an NGS garden. http://www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/garden...-dr:1&id=15122

No, but it's no good blaming them for the ills of the country is it? The responsibility for that lies elsewhere.
OMG, these flags are really trying ......... as is the Jingoism

And my mother also had four children and we are totally dysfunctional, that's families for you! Charles may like to meddle but he has, will not have, any power whatsoever will he? And now, lunch is ready.

The only sad figures I can see around here are the miserable killjoys who are so full of envy and bile that they would begrudge the nation a few days of celebration in the midst of gloom and recession, and refuse to admit that the Queen, and the Monarchy as a whole, are a tremendous asset to the nation.

                          That's what's sad.

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

Surely it should be one of these ?

They are a vital part of a system based on inherited wealth power and influence that controls this country, to the benefit of a small class.
As long as we have them , (and the aristocracy) all the other injustices that this deeply entrenched system can be justified.
They are like a pin at the top, and they help hold it all together.
If you think they don't have power.....well who else, for instance gets a bank holiday in their "honour". Wandered past a bunting bedecked C of E church recently ?They have very real power and influence.

No. Not in Wales!! We don't have CoE here btw, we are The Church in Wales. And, much as I would like to stay and argue, lunch is ready!
