I'm not a monarchist but I have a huge amount of respect for Queen Elizabeth (the rest of them are, quite frankly, a bunch of ******* who I would gladly consign to The Tower) but I intend to watch the pageant as a spectacle plus an interest in messing around in boats (plus it's a miserable wet and soggy day here)

I can't go along with this idea of her as this benign force for good who is trapped by her circumstances
I've nothing personally against the woman but if I "messed up" my children like that I would certainly deserve more than a little criticism.
She seems a rather sad figure to me who would be better off abdicating and living somewhere in the country with a few horses ............

and children
she could have chosen to be a bit more empathetic , for example ..............
And if you think they have no influence wait till Charlie gets in charge he is already a meddling buffoon ....... at least you can say that the people of London chose Boris

For the rest of us- the great majority in the country- it's a day of fun and celebration. I have been watching the coverage on Sky News and, despite the weather, the banks of the Thames are lined with hundreds of thousands of people all having a bloody good time. One of the points about the Pageant is that boats and ships of all shapes and sizes are taking part, from Tall Ships, via what is believed to be the oldest sea-worthy ship still in existence, to the little ships of Dunkirk right down to narrowboats, skiffs, and kayaks. It will be a wonderful, never to be repeated spectacle, and I shall be watching it all before going on to a street party down in the village.
You stew on it all like a grump, reading your Independent.(You might just have nudged their circulation up into double figures...). The rest of us are having a party.

That's what's sad.
Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

As long as we have them , (and the aristocracy) all the other injustices that this deeply entrenched system can be justified.
They are like a pin at the top, and they help hold it all together.
If you think they don't have power.....well who else, for instance gets a bank holiday in their "honour". Wandered past a bunting bedecked C of E church recently ?They have very real power and influence.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
I am not a number, I am a free man.
