Unfortunately my parents wanted to watch the damned coronation so I played gramophone records (remember those?) and then skulked around outside with a bottle of gin. (I will probably be doing the same thing this time - except we won't have TV - and my wife hates the monarchy as much or even more than I do).

Like saly, I watched the Coronation on someone else's telly - next door, to be precise. Then later I went with school to see the colour film. As far as I remember, it was taken for granted that it would be interesting to us. I don't remember hearing any republican sentiments at all, though there was a bit of cynicism about certain aspects of the ceremony. ("Here come the ice-creams" said our neighbour, as a sort of tray bearing various presumably sacred objects was brought on.)
We got television later in the 1950s. My parents always resisted ITV in the days when it was an optional extra.

And if skulking around with a bottle of Gin is your preferred activity, I suggest you find your nearest branch of Alcoholics Anonymous.

It's not enough apparently to have a different opinion/world view; you have to be vile to and dismissive of people who have different opinions/worldviews as well
Grow up for goodness' sake!

The group photo taken at the Queen's Luncheon party shows a number of people listed as HM of i.a. Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece and Romania, countries which AFAIK are, and have been for some time, republics. So why HM? Once a Majesty - always a Majesty? My life, each morning when I dress, is four and twenty hours less. (J Richardson)

In a Top Ten of unedifying discussions, the one being conducted on this thread will surely rank very high. If you don't approve of the Jubilee celebrations, why don't you organize your own festivities - I'm sure the more reasonable among us will refrain from using it as an excuse for the sort of childish ad hominem outbursts that have regrettably become a feature of this thread.
