They had to confirm that Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was not pregnant because if she was and subsequently gave birth to a boy then he would be the rightful heir to the throne.

        I don't make this up y'know

I freely admit I have always enjoyed the pageantry and spectacle. However, the more I can see (with modern HD TV especially), the more I wonder just what these things were like 'in the old days'. It seems things are often frayed around the edges - a little like catching a glimpse of the edge of the set in an old western film. It is surely likely that things were no better for Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. But, in a way, it's very homely because of the slight amateurishness of it all.

The Queen Mother was 52 in 1952. Are they raving mad?

(Impressed by your knowledge and expertise though - you could become the forum's Royal Correspondent )

I don't dismiss it - it sounds oddly plausible - but may I refer the rt hon gentleman to this article

                (specifically the last paragraph)

"Oddly plausible" he says and then refers me to The Daily Mail

I'll give you The Daily Mail ....

                    From the above article:-

The royals spend most of their lives shielded from criticism; this protest will give them a rare glimpse of the strength of republican sentiment in Britain today.
                    And:-

Republic said it expected ''hundreds of anti-monarchists'' to join the protest
So there'll be a few hundred, if that, at their sad little protest; as opposed to the hundreds of thousands that will be watching the River Pageant and celebrating the Jubilee across the country over the next few days.

I am sure her Majesty will get the message.

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.
