              From todays Independant

The Grauniad describes the event as the Queen on the royal barge leading a flotilla of 1,000 ships.

To me it seems more like an old woman on a badly blinged-up sand barge and a 1,000 small boats.

It sums up Britain, the media is full of BS and the gullible British pubic lap it up.

              Spot on

Elizabeth became Queen in February 1952. The Coronation was postponed until 1953 because she wanted it to take place on a sunny day. Goodness knows what that says about 1952's weather. I would imagine that the Jubilee celebrations are being held this weekend for similar reasons. Sadly, planning doesn't work well with the British climate.

But given that the dates are all a bit arbitrary, it might be worth mentioning that this year also marks the "diamond jubilee" of the UK singles chart. Introduced as a Top 12 in November 1952, the Number 1 record from that month is my choice of record for Her Majesty today, even if it isn't in other ways wholly appropriate:

Wasn't there some delay involving investigation of the widow's 'state', pregnancy-wise too?

Spot on if you're a miserable old cynic.

For the rest of us- the great majority in the country- it's a day of fun and celebration. I have been watching the coverage on Sky News and, despite the weather, the banks of the Thames are lined with hundreds of thousands of people all having a bloody good time. One of the points about the Pageant is that boats and ships of all shapes and sizes are taking part, from Tall Ships, via what is believed to be the oldest sea-worthy ship still in existence, to the little ships of Dunkirk right down to narrowboats, skiffs, and kayaks. It will be a wonderful, never to be repeated spectacle, and I shall be watching it all before going on to a street party down in the village.

You stew on it all like a grump, reading your Independent.(You might just have nudged their circulation up into double figures...). The rest of us are having a party.

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

                        Is that a cast-iron promise?

Perhaps certain London based contributors here may like to go along to Tower Bridge to join in the anti-monarchy protest which includes a delegation from Sweden and is led by Peter Tatchell and which is promised to be the ''biggest and boldest anti-monarchy protest of modern times''.

Do you mean "point" as in "abscess"?
