Originally posted by Mr Pee View PostWell, first of all, it isn't a piece of puffery from the Telegraph; the same study has been widely reported today- although probably not in the Guardian. Here's a link to the full report, with all the research back-up you need.
Who knows- if you can to read it, you might actually learn something.
Well, I've learnt that
"Information regarding the success of The Prince [ie Duke of York] in this role [promoting UK trade] is scarce and much of it, for lack of explicit evidence, is anecdotal"
I also learnt that -
"3. The intangible value of the Monarchy represents the value of the uplift to the economy attributable to the Monarchy. For example, ‘there was a £500 million uplift in leisure and tourism spending in 2011 linked to the Monarchy.’"
Unfortunately they didn't give any source for this statement, so it's difficult to know if one can believe it or not.
and -
"4. Brand Finance researched all revenue streams and costs which we believed were impacted by the Monarchy. These include tourism, spending on merchandise, the impact of Royal Warrants, security, transportation costs etc.
5. The valuation of Royal Warrants and Coats of Arms is based on notional Royalty Rates based on Brand Finance’s experience and analysis. The Royalty rates used in the calculation illustrate what could reasonably be charged for the use of the Warrants or Coats of Arms in our opinion."
I also learned that the publishers of this 'report' - in reality a journal - are a company involved in 'brand valuation and strategy'. The articles would seem to be written by their staff. They don't give any sources for their figures, so it's difficult to give them any credibility.
It's acually very quick to read - one can ignore all the promotional stuff about the company's services. If that's your idea of a credible piece of research, Mr P, I don't think you'd even make the grade at Nut wo od University (plc)

Anyway, you have taken about three paragraphs from an extensive report and, based on that, seen fit to dismiss the entire thing, conveniently ignoring all the parts of it that don't fit your argument. Never mind University, you wouldn't even get into the local primary school based on that analysis. Never mind the spelling mistake......Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

THE GARDEN PARTY
The rich arrived in pairs
And also in Rolls Royces
They talked of their affairs
In loud and strident voices
( The Husbands and the Wives
Of this select society
Lead independent lives
Of infinity variety )
The Poor arrived in Fords
Whose features they resembled
They laughed to see so many Lords
And Ladies all assembled.
The People in Between
Looked underdone and harrassed,
And out of place and mean,
And horribly embarrassed
For the hoary social curse
Gets hoarier and hoarier
And it stinks a trifle worse
Than in the days of Queen Victoria,
When
They married and gave in marriage,
They danced at the County Ball
And some of them kept a carriage
AND THE FLOOD DESTROYED THEM ALL.
H Belloc.
Doesn't need updating!
